CBI Director Alok Verma on Monday, November 19, filed his response to the report by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), which is investigating corruption charges against Verma.

Earlier on Monday, SC granted him additional time till 4 pm to file his response, adding that it would not adjourn the next hearing in the case on Tuesday. Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who had appeared on behalf of Verma, had sought more time to file the response.

In a setback for the CBI Director, the Supreme Court last week categorised the CVC’s report as very complimentary on some charges, not so complimentary on some charges, very uncomplimentary on some charges and added that some charges require further probe.

The bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, had given Verma time till November 19 to reply to the findings and said it would resume the hearing on Tuesday, November 20.

The Supreme Court is hearing a petition filed by Verma, challenging an October 23 government order divesting him of all responsibilities. Verma and CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana were sent on leave after differences between them came out in the open. The SC had given the CVC two weeks to probe Asthana’s allegations of corruption against Verma.
