Starting her political innings in Uttar Pradesh from her home turf in a very uncharacteristic style, Congress general secretary and in charge, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi while categorically stating that “The term Chowkidar is synonymous with the wealthy class and not the agrarian community” also cautioned the electorate to refrain from getting swayed away by factors other than ones which are directly connected with their daily lives.

Accompanied by hordes of party workers and greeted by an enthusiastic crowd which had gathered outside the Badey Hanuman temple in Sangam area, Priyanka offered prayers to Lord Hanuman under the guidance of Mahant Baghambari Gaddi, Swami Narendra Giri she straightaway drove towards the Sangam nose area and boarded the waiting boat to embark on her three day long Ganga yatra.

When asked by waiting media persons on the purpose behind her temple visit she politely said “ I have come here to pray for the peace and prosperity of the country and there is no political motive. On being asked as to whether she had prayed for the victory of Congress party in the parliamentary elections she replied “ I never seek any favour from the Almighty”.

She made a brief stopover at Dumduma ghat near Sirsa where she was greeted by locals and members of the community residing on the banks of Ganga. Making a short and brief speech, she asked the locals whether they have jobs, to which the gathering replied in the negative.

Bringing alive memories of the Indira Gandhi era came the moment when she reached Sirsa market where she was cheered by the locals who showered flower petals from their rooftops and balconies on her procession

Putting forth her views before the gathering she cautioned the public to be wary of those who are trying to divide them on issues which are not even connected with their life. Questioning the present government for the dismal job scenario in the country which has surpassed all records of the last 45 years she said, “Rahulji is right when he questions the intentions of the Chowkidar because it is a well known fact that only the rich and affluent class hire the services of former. The farmer never needs a chowkidar.

Interacting with those present at the spot, Priyanka Gandhi tersely criticised the present political dispensation in the country where those who try to question the policies of the government are intimated and booked under different charges as was the case of an ASHA worker who was booked under charges of sedition, she said.

Promising to bring back good days for the people if the Congress party comes to power at the center, the Congress general secretary who all along the route was accompanied by former Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) MP from Bahraich, Savitri Bai Phule assured the public that their needs would be taken care of in the right earnest unlike the present government where even MGNREGA payments are delayed by months. “Think before you vote and choose the right candidate to bring a government which works for your benefit and not it’s own”, she said before she left the spot for her journey ahead.

Bringing alive the memories of the Indira Gandhi era came the moment when she reached Sirsa market where she was cheered by the locals who showered flower petals from their rooftops and balconies on her procession. She was offered a glass of juice by a local woman who had waited patiently for hours anticipating her arrival. Responding with utmost modesty Priyanka gulped down the whole glass bringing smiles on the face of the woman who had all praise for the Gandhi daughter.
