Congress MP for Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor on August 15, Independence Day expressed anguish at the “grossly inadequate” coverage by the national media of the flood situation in Kerala, “compared to the gravity of the situation here”.

“The flood situation here in Kerala is really bad. The national media coverage has been grossly inadequate compared to the gravity of the situation here. It is a sad reflection of the truism that the farther you are from Delhi, the less you matter in today's India,” tweeted Tharoor on Wednesday.

Tharoor is presently in his constituency Thiruvananthapuram, which though flooded and dealing with many evacuees, is still comparatively better off than many other places in Kerala. Tharoor has been visiting evacuees at temporary relief camps and tweeting about the floods across the city and state all day.

Malayalis post about dire situations in flooded Kerala on social media

Malayalis across Kerala, many without water, transport or electricity, have been posting about the floods on social media. “Please pray for us,” tweeted civil engineer James Wilson. Kerala journalists, while covering the ravages of the floods, have also been helping out stranded people.
