Congress counter to the Prime Minister's Twitter reassurances, on Citizenship (Amendment Bill), to the Assamese people on Thursday is giving Twitterati the chuckles.

Tweeting from their official twitter handle, the Congress wondered how the prime minister's message will reach the people of Assam when internet services have been suspended in the state.

The tweet read: "Our brothers & sisters in Assam cannot read your 'reassuring' message Modiji, in case you've forgotten, their internet has been cut off."

The netizens too asked when the internet services are suspended in Assam how can the people of the state read PM Modi’s heartwarming message. Some others just wrote ‘Kashmir to Assam!’. While others questioned if there is so much faith in the people of Assam, then why have internet services been suspended?

In the backdrop of agitation across the state of Assam, following the Parliament's clearance of the CAB, the PM took to Twitter to urge them to maintain calm. He had tweeted in both English and Assamese languages.

He wrote that he wanted to assure people of Assam that they have nothing to worry about the CAB.

Meanwhile, the suspension of internet services in ten districts of Assam was extended for 48 hours on Thursday, beginning 12 pm, to prevent "misuse" of social media to disturb peace and tranquillity, and to maintain law and order, officials said.

Internet services will remain suspended in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup, Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political department) Sanjay Krishna told PTI.

Internet services were suspended at 7 pm on Wednesday amid massive protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Thousands of people defied the curfew in Guwahati and took to the streets, prompting police to open fire, even as protests against the contentious Bill intensified in the state.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan after facing religious persecution there.
