The Congress party will hold a nation wide protest against re-enactment of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, said Congress General Secretary (organisation), KC Venugopal.

These protests will be held in all state headquarters on Monday at “places associated with the life of Mahatma Gandhi or near statues of Mahatma,” he said.

Releasing a letter to the media, Venugopal further said, "these provocative and reprehensible actions, happening in the BJP ruled states take place with the candid and clandestine support given by the ruling party and the same reveals the deep hatred still carried by the right wing groups against the father of the Nation and his ideas of Secularism, Ahimsa and Brotherhood."

It is important to recall that an RSS' affiliate Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha on January 30, had re-enacted the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in Aligarh. Members of the right wing outfit,  garlanded a statue of Naturam Godse.

“The protest should preferably be held with placards etc in the places associated with the life of Mahatma Gandhi or near statues of Mahatma with an aim to highlight his messages,” reads the letter, adding that the protests will begin at 10 am in all state headquarters.

Uttar Pradesh police has so far arrested five persons for firing  at and burning Mahatma Gandhi's effigy.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Aligarh) Akash Kulhary  had been quoted as saying by the local media that a police post in-charge has also been suspended.

The UP police had registered a case against 13 people associated with the right wing organisation, including its controversial national general secretary Puja Shakun Pandey. It was Pandey who could be seen in the video firing at the effigy of Gandhi.
