Journalist succumbs to COVID-19 in Telangana

A 36-year-old journalist working for a Telugu television channel succumbed to COVID-19 at the state-run Gandhi Hospital here on Sunday.

He was admitted on June 4 after being referred from another state-run hospital.

The journalist had bilateral pneumonia with Type-1 respiratory failure and Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome (ARDS) when he was admitted, doctors at the hospital said.

Lockdown: Goa churches, mosques not to reopen from Jun 8

Churches and mosques in Goa have decided to remain closed for some more time, even though the state government has allowed reopening of religious places from Monday as part of the lockdown relaxations.

Temple committees, however, are yet to take a call on opening their shrines for devotees in the coastal state.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said religious places in the state can open from Monday, but no mass activities will be allowed there in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

Till Saturday, Goa reported 267 COVID-19 cases. Of these, 202 are active cases, as per official figures.

B'desh to reimpose lockdown to quell COVID-19 spread

In an effort to quell the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bangladesh government has planned to reimpose area-wise lockdowns in capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country, a senior Health Ministry official said here.

Habibur Rahman Khan, also the convenor of the Bangladeshi government's media cell on COVID-19, said on Saturday that steps were underway to place parts of Bangladesh under lockdown within the next few days, reports Xinhua news agency.

The decision comes about a week after Bangladesh withdrew the nationwide lockdown at the end of the last month.

A visit to the Lucknow zoo from Monday will be marked by several conditions due to the corona pandemic.

R. K. Singh, Director of the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden in Lucknow, said, "Tickets will now have to be purchased online from the website and the ticket window will remain closed as a precaution to minimise human contact."

The timings for entry will also be divided into three parts with two-hour each to allow the sanitization process to take place in between the next set of visitors. The total number of persons who will be allowed entry in one time slot will be limited to 500.

A constable of Kolkata Police who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at a state-run hospital died Saturday, a source at the health department said.

The constable, who was posted at the Shakespeare Sarani police station, succumbed late Saturday evening but the cause of his death was not stated by the health department, he said.

Global COVID-19 cases top 6.8 mn: Johns Hopkins University

Confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide topped 6.8 million on Saturday, reaching 6,800,604, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

A total of 396,591 people worldwide have died of the disease, the data showed, Xinhua reported.

The US suffered the most from the pandemic, with 1,908,235 cases and a death toll of 109,443. Countries with over 200,000 cases also include Brazil, Russia, Britain, India, Spain and Italy.

The number of cases outside China exceeded 6,715,000, according to the CSSE data.

S.Korea reports 57 more COVID-19 cases, 11,776 in total

South Korea reported 57 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of 12 a.m. on Sunday, raising the total number of infections to 11,776.

The daily caseload hovered above 50 for the second straight day due to small cluster infections relevant to religious gatherings, night spots, a distribution centre and a health product retailer in the metropolitan area, Xinhua reported.

Of the new cases, four were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,292.

No more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 273. The total fatality rate stood at 2.32 per cent.

France's COVID-19 deaths up by 31 to 29,142

France saw its overall death toll of the coronavirus pandemic rise to 29,142 as it recorded 31 more deaths, the Health Ministry has said.

The updated tally only includes hospital daily fatalities as those occurring in nursing homes and medico-social establishments will be updated next Tuesday.

The number of people in hospital with coronavirus infection fell to 12,479, including 1,059 in intensive care, Xinhua reported on Saturday.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, France has registered 153,634 confirmed cases of infection, including 579 since Friday.

Italy's COVID-19 death toll rises by 72 to 33,846

Italy recorded another 72 COVID-19 victims in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 33,846, the Civil Protection Department said on Saturday.

Total active infections stood at 35,877, a decrease of 1,099 from Friday. Meanwhile, another 1,297 COVID-19 patients recovered, bringing the total to 165,078 on Saturday.

Of those active infections, 293 are in intensive care, down by 23 compared to Friday, and 5,062 are hospitalized with symptoms, down by 299, the Civil Protection Department said, Xinhua reported. The remaining 30,582, or about 85 percent, are isolated at home because they are asymptomatic or have very light symptoms.
