Coronavirus outbreak: UPSC defers civil services interviews
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday deferred the personality tests (interviews) of the candidates of civil services examination 2019 as a precautionary measure to check the spread of coronavirus, a statement issued by the Personnel Ministry said.
"New dates for the personality tests (interviews) will be informed to the candidates in due course," it said.
Due to the prevailing conditions caused by COVID–19, as a precautionary measure, the Union Public Service Commission has deferred the personality tests of the candidates of the civil services (main) examination 2019 scheduled from March 23, 2020 to April 3, 2020 until further orders, the statement said.
The commission conducts civil services examination annually in three stages -- prelims, main and interview (personality test) -- to select officers of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.

The Health Ministry on Friday said that 206 coronavirus positive cases have been reported in India so far and more than 6,700 people who have come in contact with them are under surveillance.
Joint Secretary of the Health Ministry Luv Aggarwal emphasised that social distancing is primary to fight COVID-19.
He urged people to use the toll free number 1075 for any query and said that the government is working on preventive approach.
"The prime minister has called for Janta curfew. One day's cooperation will help break the chain of transmission," Aggarwal said.
He also said that there was no shortage of essential commodities to fight coronavirus.
Aggarwal said the Italian man who died in Jaipur on Friday will not be counted among those dead in India due to coronavirus and maintained that the death toll in the country is four.
Central teams have been sent to states for hand-holding them in strengthening their capacities in tackling coronavirus, he said.

With two more persons testing positive for the COVID-19 infection in Ladakh on Friday, the total number of novel coronavirus patients has risen to 10 in the Union Territory.
Rigzin Samphel, Secretary/Commissioner Ladakh affairs said on Friday that two more persons from the Union Territory have tested positive for the coronavirus taking the number of infected patients in the region to 10.
It is important to mention that both these patients did not have any foreign travel history.
One of the 10 infected patients in Ladakh is an army soldier belonging to the Ladakh scouts regiment.
In Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, the number of infected patients is four, one belonging to the valley and three to the Jammu region.
Over 90 students who arrived here yesterday and today from Bangladesh have been put into quarantine at different makeshift facilities in Srinagar city.

The Mankapur Indoor Stadium has cancelled all its activities till March 31 in wake of the coronavirus pandemic, an official said on Friday.
Maharashtra has so far recorded 52 positive cases of Covid-19, the highest in the country.
"As a precautionary measure, we have suspended all sporting activities at the centre," deputy director of sports and youth services Subhash Rewatkar told PTI.
Around 700 sportspersons used to visit the centre for practice on a daily basis, the official said, adding that no visitors will be allowed till March 31.

An official of South Western Railway has been suspended for "hiding" her son, who returned from Germany and later tested positive for coronavirus, at a railway guest house in Bengaluru, officials said on Friday.
She not only failed to inform authorities about her son's return from Germany but also endangered the lives of others by lodging him in a railway rest house near the main Bangalore railway station, railway spokesperson E Vijaya told PTI.
The Assistant Personnel Officer (Traffic) has been suspended, Vijaya said.
The 25-year-old man, who came from Germany via Spain and was instructed to be in home quarantine after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 13, later tested positive for COVID-19 on March 18, a railway spokesperson told PTI.
"She virtually hid her son to protect her family but endangered all of us," a South Western Railway official said.

Cannes Film Festival delayed over coronavirus concerns
The Cannes Film Festival has been postponed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
The event, which was scheduled for May 12 through 23, might be shifted to June or July, the organisers said.
"Several options are considered in order to preserve its running, the main one being a simple postponement," the organisers' statement said.

Kolkata resident tests positive for COVID-19, 2nd case in Bengal
A Kolkata resident with a recent travel history to the United Kingdom has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, making it the second confirmed case in West Bengal, an official said on Friday.
The man returned from the UK on March 13 and was admitted to the Beliaghata ID Hospital in the city on March 19 with symptoms of COVID-19, the state government official said.
The swabs of the patient were collected and the reports received from the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases confirmed that the man contracted the deadly virus, according to the official.
The man is in his early 20s and a resident of Ballygunge area.

Odisha has reported the second confirmed case of novel coronavirus after a man who returned from a COVID-19-affected country tested positive, the state health department said.
"Today 14 samples were tested at RMRC (Regional Medical Research Centre) Bhubaneswar out of which one is positive for #COVID2019," the Health and Family Welfare Department tweeted on Thursday night. "This is the second positive case in Odisha." The man has a travel history to a COVID-19-affected country. The state surveillance unit has started tracing the contacts, according to the department.
This is the second positive case in the state after a Italy-returned researcher was found positive, the department said.

US asks citizens to avoid all international travel due to COVID-19
The US has advised its citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of coronavirus and plan to return immediately.
Upgrading its Health Advisory to Level 4, the State Department said that in countries where commercial departure options remain available, American citizens who live in the US should arrange for immediate return to the country, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.
US citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel, the State Department said, adding that many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice.

The novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 195 on Friday after 22 fresh cases were reported from various parts of the country, according to the Health Ministry data.
The cases include 32 foreign nationals including 17 from Italy, 3 from the Philippines, two from the UK, one each belonging to Canada, Indonesia and Singapore.
The figure also includes four deaths reported from Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra so far.
"The total number of active COVID 2019 cases across India stands at 171 so far," the ministry said adding that 20 others have been cured/discharged/migrated while four have died.
Delhi has, so far, reported 17 positive cases which includes one foreigner, while Uttar Pradesh has recorded 19 cases, including one foreigner. Maharashtra has 47 cases, including three foreigners, while Kerala has recorded 28 cases which include two foreign nationals.
Karnataka has 15 coronavirus patients. The number of cases in Ladakh rose to 10 and Jammu and Kashmir four. Telangana has reported 16 cases which include nine foreigners. Rajasthan has also reported seven cases including that of two foreigners. Tamil Nadu has three cases so far while Andhra Pradesh has two.
Odisha, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Pondicherry, Chandigarh and Punjab have reported one case each.
In Haryana, there are 17 cases, which include 14 foreigners.

10 new suspected cases of coronavirus in Nashik
As many as 10 new coronavirus suspects were admitted to the district civil hospital in Nashik, Maharashtra on Thursday, hospital sources said.

The famous Lord Kalaram temple in the city has also been closed for devotees.
