Bihar reports 12th COVID-19 death, total cases 2,477

A 48-year-old man has died of COVID-19 in Bihar, taking the coronavirus death toll in the state to 12, the state health department said on Sunday.

The number of COVID-19 cases in in the state increased to 2,477 with 87 people testing positive, it said.

The deceased belonged to Marhaura in Saran district and was admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on May 22 with fever and cough. He died on Saturday afternoon, PMCH Superintendent Bimal Kumar Karak told PTI.

Though the deceased's sample was collected the day he was admitted but his test report confirmed that he was COVID-19 positive on Saturday after his death, Karak said.

Karnataka COVID-19 tally at 2,056 with 97 new cases

With 97 new cases, Karnataka’s COVID-19 tally crossed the 2,000-mark, while 26 were discharged from hospitals taking the number of cured persons to 634, said an official.

"The total number of COVID-19 cases across the state is 2,056, with 97 more testing positive during the past 18 hours," said a state health official.

The number of active cases in the state is 1,378 and COVID-19 deaths 42, including 2 for non-COVID reasons.

Of the 26 discharged, 18 are in Davanagere, 4 in Chitradurga, 3 in Bagalkote and one in Haveri across the southern state.

Of the new cases, 41 are women and 19 children below 20 years.

"68 of the 97 new cases are returnees from Maharashtra, the worst affected COVID-hit state in the country with 47,190 cases till Saturday," said the official.

Regulate Noida-Delhi movement due to corona risk: Official

Authorities in Gautam Buddh Nagar in adjoining Delhi have emphasised on not allowing unhindered movement of people on the Delhi-Noida border, pointing out that it will increase the risk of spread of coronavirus.

No amendment in lockdown order, air travel not allowed as yet: Maharashtra govt

Even as the Centre plans resumption of domestic flights from May 25, a Maharashtra government official on Saturday said the state had not yet amended its May 19 lockdown order which allowed only certain kinds of flights.

As per the May 19 order of the state government extending the coronavirus-induced lockdown to May 31, all domestic and international air travel of passengers, except for domestic medical services, domestic air ambulance and for security purposes as permitted by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), will continue to remain prohibited across the state.

"We have not yet amended this lockdown order issued on May 19," an official told PTI when queried about resumption of passenger flights in Maharashtra.

Earlier in the day, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, during a Facebook live session, said India will try to restart a good percentage of international passenger flights before August.

All scheduled commercial passenger flights have been suspended in India since March 25 when the lockdown was announced.

MP expects corona cases to rise in June

The infection has spread to 50 of 52 districts. The health bulletin issued on Saturday evening confirmed 6,371 cases in the state so far. These include 2,933 from Indore, 1,191 from Bhopal and 531 patients from Ujjain. The death toll so far is 281.

Actor Kiran Kumar tests positive for COVID-19

Veteran film and TV actor Kiran Kumar has tested positive for coronavirus and is currently under home quarantine.

The 74-year-old actor said he is asymptomatic and is doing "absolutely fine."

"I am asymptomatic. On May 14, I went to the hospital for a medical check-up, where the COVID-19 test was mandatory. So I got myself tested and the result was positive.

"But I had no symptoms then, nor do I have any now. There's no fever, no cough, I'm fine and have self quarantined at home," Kumar told PTI.

Global COVID-19 cases over 5.3 million, says Johns Hopkins

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has increased to over 5.3 million, while the death toll surged past 342,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Sunday morning, the total number of cases stood at 5,309,698, while the death toll increased to 342,078, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US has the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 1,622,605 and 97,087, respectively.

In terms of cases, Brazil accounted for the second highest number of infections at 347,398.

This was followed by Russia (335,882), the UK (258,504), Spain (235,290), Italy (229,327), France (182,036), Germany (179,986), Turkey (155,686), Iran (133,521), India (131,423) and Peru (115,754), the CSSE figures showed.

Meanwhile, the UK came in second after the US with 36,757 COVID-19 deaths, the highest fatalities in Europe.

The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are Italy (32,735), Spain (28,678), France (28,218), and Brazil (22,013).
