Country's COVID-19 death toll rises to 68, number of cases to 2,902

The number of COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 2,902 on Saturday while the death toll rose to 68, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stands at 2,650, while 183 people were either cured or discharged and one had migrated to another country, it said.

As per the ministry's updated data on coronavirus cases Saturday morning, six fresh deaths were reported -- three from Maharahtra, two from Delhi and one from Gujarat.

Thus, Maharashtra has reported the most deaths (19) so far, followed by Gujarat (9), Telengana (7), Madhya Pradesh (6), Delhi (6), Punjab (5), Karnataka (3), West Bengal (3), Jammu and Kashmir (2), Uttar Pradesh (2) and Kerala (2).

Andhra Pradesh,Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh have reported a death each.

The figure of 2,902 includes 55 foreign nationals.

At least 20 more members of the Tablighi Jamaat, who returned from the congregation in Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz in March, were tested positive for coronavirus in Haryana on Saturday, taking their total number in the past 24 hours to 25.

Thirteen, mostly belonging to Bangladesh, were reported from Palwal district, while five from Faridabad and two from Bhiwani.

Also, Faridabad reported three other patients, taking the total number of cases in the district to 14.

AP reports 16 new cases, tally climbs to 180

The COVID-19 positive numbers continue to climb steadily with every passing day in Andhra Pradesh. The state has reported 16 new cases in the 12 hours ending 10 a.m. on Saturday. With this, the state's tally of COVID-19 cases stood at 180.

According to the statement issued by the state nodal officer on Saturday, four new cases each were reported from Kishna and Kadapa districts respectively. Similarly, three new cases, each from Guntur and Kurnool districts were confirmed, and Chittooru and Prakaasam districts reported one case each.

With as many as 47 persons testing positive for coronavirus in Maharashtra, the figure of such patients in the state jumped to 537 on Saturday, officials said.

The number of such patients till Friday night was 490, they said.

Telangana tracing contacts of woman tested positive after death

Health officials in Telangana's Ranga Reddy district were trying to trace the contacts of a woman who tested positive after her death.

The 55-year-old woman, who was running a kirana (provisions) shop in Chegur village, near Hyderabad, died on April 1 at the government-run Osmania Hospital in the city. The next day she was cremated in the village.

However, the samples collected during her treatment at the hospital later showed she was Covid-19 positive. It was only on Friday that the health department declared she tested positive.

The news sent the village into a tizzy. About 30 teams of health officials, revenue and police swung into action to screen the villagers.

Telangana has so far reported death of nine persons due to covid-19. Barring this woman, all others had attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi last month.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday sealed Bomikhal area here after three COVID-19 positive cases were detected in the area.

BMC restricted entry and exit into Bomikhal area where three COVID-19 positive cases were detected on Friday evening. The move is aimed to contain the possible spread of COVID-19. The corporation has declared the region as a containment zone.
