At least two Communist Party of India (Marxist) offices were vandalised in an alleged attack by Bharatiya Janata Party and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) workers, which left several CPI(M) cadres and a leader injured on Friday. The CPI(M) has claimed that the vandals damaged the furniture and several important papers of the party during the attacks.

A statement by the CPI(M) State Secretariat carried by local daily Tripura Observer on the front page of its Saturday edition read that CPI(M)‘s Sonamura sub divisional office was attacked at 4 pm and party leader Ahidur Rahaman was “tortured”.

The statement further alleged that “Last night at about 9 pm BJP workers attacked CPIM Manik Bhander office and destroyed the furnitures. Earlier, CPIM workers Utpal Das was beaten by BJP workers”.

CPI(M) alleged that the BJP workers also assaulted CPI(M) worker Samrat Bhattacherjee at Ranirbazar. Maintaining that the BJP has been committing atrocities on CPI (M) supporters and workers even one month after the declaration of election results, it further stated that “there is no rule of law. The new government has introduced Goonda Raj in the state.”

Tripura has been witnessing political violence for the last few months. But the reports of CPI (M) cadres being attacked, houses and offices ransacked and beaten up in many parts of Tripura following BJP’s victory in the state assembly elections have increased recently.

Earlier on March 3, CPI (M) Panchayat Pradhan Chitta Ranjan Debroy and party workers including Swapan Paul, Gopal Paul, Rafiq Mia, Jalil Mia, Tutan Sarkar and Najrul Islam’s houses were allegedly attacked by BJP workers.
