The Congress Working Committee (CWC) met on Saturday, August 4 to discuss the prevailing political situation in the country. The CWC decided to target the Narendra Modi government on issues of corruption and its "failure" to provide jobs to the youth.” The meeting was presided over by Congress President Rahul Gandhi. It was the second meeting of the CWC since Rahul Gandhi became party chief in December last year.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam featured prominently at the meeting. At a press briefing after the meeting, Congress National Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said NRC had to be implemented as per the Assam Accord. "We express our commitment to the accord and the NRC. Congress Working Committee believes every citizen of this country has a right to prove citizenship. They must be given a chance.”

Surjewala alleged the NRC issue was being used by the government to divert attention from its colossal failures on providing employment, and also from the Rafale deal, which has been in the news. Surjewala said, "Why did PM justify 300% hike in Rafle deal? Why was a public sector company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited not given the tender? A contract worth ₹1,30,000 crore was instead gven to a private company."

The CWC also discussed at length how Gitanjali Gems Managing Director Mehul Choksi fled the country and alleged that the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and PMO were "hand-in-glove", said Surjewala, adding that the CWC decided to launch a mass movement on issue of corruption, for which “We have support from opposition parties also”.

Rahul Gandhi also indicated that the party will launch a campaign against the Modi government ahead of the assembly polls later this year and the Lok Sabha polls next year. "The CWC met today (Saturday). As a team, we discussed the political situation in the country and the huge opportunity for the Congress to highlight issues of corruption and failure of the government to provide jobs to our youth. Thank you to all those who attended today's meeting," Gandhi said in a tweet.

In a later tweet, he added, “One of the highlights of today’s CWC meeting, was Mr Anthony’s brilliant description of the Rafale robbery: ₹1,30,000 crore stolen from the people of India and given to a friend who was ₹45,000 crore in debt.
