Holding the Modi government responsible for the deadly riots in northeast Delhi that claimed 22 lives so far, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi Wednesday said Home Minister Amit Shah must resign.

Hitting out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for not taking adequate steps to ensure peace, the Congress president said, “Delhi Police has remained paralyzed. In the last 72 hours, around 18 lives have been lost so far, including a head constable. Hundreds are in hospitals, many with gunshot injuries. Violence continues unabated on the streets of North East Delhi. The Centre and the Union Home Minister is responsible for the present situation in Delhi. The Union Home Minister should resign.”

“There is a conspiracy behind the violence, the country also saw this during Delhi elections. Many BJP leaders made inciting comments creating an atmosphere of fear and hatred,” said Gandhi addressing the media.

Appealing people to maintain peace and calm, Gandhi instructed Congress leaders to help the affected families.

“CWC appeals to people of Delhi to reject politics of hate and do their best in healing the rifts caused by these shameful events, to help rebuild all that has been lost and to ensure that such events do not take place ever again,” asserted Gandhi.

Speaking on behalf of the nation, Sonia asked following questions while addressing the media:

1. Where was the Home Minister of the country since last Sunday and what was he doing?

2. Where was the Chief Minister of Delhi since last Sunday and what was he doing?

3. What information was given by the intelligence agencies after the Delhi elections and what action was taken on that?

4. How many police forces were put in place from Sunday night, when there was a possibility of rioting?

5. When the situation in Delhi was uncontrollable, Delhi Police could not control the situation, why were Central Paramilitary forces not called?

According to sources, the grand old party is likely to evolve a strategy on the continued violence in Delhi, following protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Speaking just minutes after her mother’s press briefing, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also appealed to Delhi residents to desist from violence. “What BJP leader Kapil Mishra has said is shameful and the government not doing anything is even more shameful,” Priyanka said.
