In a video that went viral on social media, Rajasthan’s Ramganj Mandi MLA and state BJP general secretary Madan Dilawar has said that the ongoing protests by farmers were a ‘conspiracy to spread bird flu (avian influenza) as the farmers were eating chicken biryani’.

The BJP MLA also said that there could be terrorists, thieves and looters among the demonstrators. “They could be the enemies of farmers,” Dilawar said.

“If the government does not remove the protestors either through prayer or by taking stronger means, then the country will face the problem of bird flu,” he added.

Dilawar went on to allege that the protesting farmers were ‘on a picnic’. "The so-called farmers involved in the agitation are not worried about the country. They are not protesting but enjoying picnic, relishing chicken, biryani, cashew, almonds and are availing all sorts of luxuries," he said.

Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra reacted strongly to Dilwar’s statement, saying that it revealed the BJP’s mindset, as per a PTI report.

“It is shameful for Rajasthan BJP MLA Madan Dilavar ji to use words like terrorists, robbers for farmers,” Dotasra tweeted. “You are calling the protests of food provider who brought food to your stomach a picnic, you are holding them responsible for the bird flu?”

National President of Indian Youth Congress Srinivas BV reacted to the video by posting a tweet, “Why do all ‘Nagpuri gems’ belong to the BJP only”.

According to the website of UK’s National Health Service (NHS), avian influenza rarely affects humans. “You can't catch bird flu through eating fully cooked poultry or eggs, even in areas with an outbreak of bird flu,” it adds, a fact affirmed by experts and doctors in multiple news reports.
