About a year and a half after the first draft was published, the final list of Assam’s  National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published at 10 am on Saturday, August 31.

Names of 3.11 crore applicants included in final NRC, 19.07 lakh excluded. Prateek Hajela, State Coordinator, NRC says, “A total of 3,11,21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in final NRC leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit their claims. Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeal before Foreigners Tribunals”

Security has been tightened in Assam, with tens of thousands of paramilitary personnel and police posted across the north-eastern state bordering Bangladesh.

The NRC is an exercise to identify Indian citizens living in Assam, a state which is considered to be marked by illegal migration from Bangladesh.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday had said that those excluded from the list will get an opportunity to file appeals and be heard in the Foreigners’ Tribunals (FT). “Government of Assam will take care of the cause of the excluded people and due care will be taken so that nobody is subjected to any unnecessary harassment,” he said.

The final draft of NRC had included 2.89 crore of the 3.29 crore applicants, and left out over 40 lakh people. Over 36 lakh of those left out, had filed claims against the exclusion and of the 2.89 crore included, objections were filed against around 2 lakh people.
