Eight days after the Mumbai police raided the premises of a seed company known as, United Phosphorus Limited (UPL), an FIR has been registered against the company on Tuesday for allegedly storing and making campaign material for the BJP without the Election Commission’s clearance.

Acting on Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson, Sachin Sawant’s complaint, the EC flying squad raided the premises of the company and seized electronic propaganda material worth over ₹6 crore.

Speaking to media, Sawant claimed, “We had to fight to get the case registered against the UPL. The police first registered a non-commisable offence. Finally, I appealed to the observers and chief electoral officer Ashwani Kumar and police commissioner Sanjay Barve. Following which, the FIR was registered.”

“The offence is registered under Representation of People’s Act, and we expect that the provisions of the Indian Penal Code will be applied,” added Sawant.

Demanding a CBI inquiry into the case, Sawant also claimed that Pradip Goyal, minister Piyush Goyal’s brother, is an independent director of UPL.

Sawant also blamed UPL for the death of 40 farmers in Vidarbha region, alleging that the company has collaboration with the BJP.
