Former UP and Uttarakhand CM ND Tiwari passes away aged 93

Former CM of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Congress leader ND Tiwari passed away on Thursday. It was his 93rd birthday today

Former CM of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Congress leader ND Tiwari passed away on Thursday. He was 93. He was ailing for a long time.

The politician was admitted to Max Hospital in Saket on September 20 last year after suffering a brain stroke. Tiwari died at 2.50 pm. He was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital on October 26. He was suffering from fever and pneumonia.

A team of doctors was monitoring his condition in the ICU round the clock.

ND Tiwari served as three-times Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, one time Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Minister of External Affairs under Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet and Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

Born on October 18, 1925, ND Tiwari joined the Indian National Congress in 1963 and was elected Member of Legislative Assembly from Kashipur in 1965. During 1979-80,  he remained the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in the Chaudhary Charan Singh government.

Tiwari's political career came to a abrupt end when he was forced to resign from the post of Andhra Pradesh Governor following a sex scandal.

Tiwari, along with Arjun Singh formed All India Indira Congress (Tiwari) in 1994-95 but joined back after Sonia Gandhi took over the reigns of the Congress Party. In 2007, Tiwari was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh but resigned in 2009 following his alleged involvement in a sex scandal.

"Tiwari-ji's contribution to Uttarakhand can never be forgotten. He played a key role in giving pace to the financial and industrial development of the newly formed Uttarakhand, and helped the state to stand up on its feet," Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat tweeted condoling the death of ND Tiwari.


Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Culture and Tourism and Civil Aviation also paid tribute to ND Tiwari in his tweet:
