Days before the assembly elections in Bihar, about four people died and dozens were injured in a brutal police lathi-charge during Goddess Durga idol immersion on the occasion of Vijayadashmi in Munger, the local residents said.

However, various newspapers reported that one person died during the lathicharge. The police initially fired tear gas shells t control the crowd and later resorted to lathi charge.

“The mob pelted stones and opened fire on police which led to the death of one person and injured 27 people including 20 policemen,” The Hindustan Times quoted Munger’s superintendent of police Lipi Singh as saying.

According to some local residents, the situation became tense when the policemen beat up some people carrying the idol of Durga. An argument of sorts ensued between the organisers of Durga Puja and the police. The police say thattThe crowd started pelting stones which prompted them to resort to lathicharge.

Former JNU President and CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar tweeted the video of the incident asking the state government to take immediate action against the police officials responsible for the unfortunate incident

“Dozens of people have been injured after the barbaric lathi charge by the police during immersion of Durga ji's idol in Munger, Bihar last night. Locals say that four people have died. Action should be taken immediately against policemen responsible for this terrible vandalism”, tweeted Kanhaiya Kumar.
