Girl thrashes man masturbating next to her on Delhi bus; public refused to help

A man allegedly masturbated in front of a girl on a Delhi bus. When the girl raised an alarm she said that no one came forward to stop him, following which she beat him up and informed the police.

The girl was returning from Kapashera to her home in Sangam Vihar and had boarded the bus operating on route number 517 when the crime occured around 9.15pm on Tuesday, November 20.

“The bus was full but no one helped me even restrain the man. One man wanted me to stop hitting him. There was just one passenger who tried to help me, but later refused to be a witness,” the woman alleged in a Hindustan Times report.

The man was taken into custody by the staff of a police control room van that intercepted the bus near Andheria Modh.

The girl said that she was sitting on the seats reserved for women when the accused stood next to her and started masturbating.

The man was identified as Mukesh Ranjan Kumar and works with an event management company. He was arrested and booked under molestation charges.

This is not the first instance of such an incident occurring on public transport. Recently two other female journalists also experienced a similar crime. Women have regularly complained about such acts of sexual harassment in public places or on public transport but little has changed.
