Senior IPS officer Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota was given additional charge as DGP of Punjab Police on Saturday after incumbent DGP Dinkar Gupta proceeded on leave. Sahota was posted as Special DGP (Armed Battalion Punjab).

Sahota’s name was cleared by the Chief Minister’s Office soon after CM Charanjit Singh Channi returned to Chandigarh after holding a four-hour long brainstorming session with party leadership in Delhi on Saturday night.

1986 batch IPS officer Sidharth Chhtopadhyaya and 1987 batch officer VK Bhawra were being considered as frontrunners for the top post.

Sahota, who is from the 1988 batch, has superseded six officers.

Meanwhile, outgoing DGP Dinkar Gupta has sought permission for central deputation. He was already empanelled for the central government posting last year.
