Iron Lady Irom Sharmila gives birth to twin girls on Sunday

Irom Sharmila also known as the Iron Lady of India gave birth to twin girls on Sunday, which also coincided with Mother’s Day at a hospital in Bengaluru.

She underwent a C-section delivery at 35 weeks of pregnancy at the Malleshwaram branch of Cloudnine hospital on Sunday, reported Bangalore Mirror. The hospital spokesperson stated that both the mother and the babies were doing well and will be released shortly.

Sharmila’s twins -Nix Shakhi and Autumn Tara-weighed 2.16 kgs and 2.15 kgs respectively at the time of the delivery.

She and her husband settled in Kodaikanal after getting married in 2017.

The 47 year old activist who kept a hunger strike for 16 years, demanding that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act or AFSPA be withdrawn from Manipur, married her long time partner Desmond Coutinho.

Before undertaking the hunger strike, she was already a champion and activist for civil rights and had participated in many movements against human rights violations in Manipur.

She decided to hold a non-violent protest after a massacre took place in Malom town, in Manipur, where ten civilians, including children and the elderly were killed.
