In an open letter to fellow citizens, a few eminent persons including former Supreme Court judge Justice J. Chelameswar and former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi have urged the people to introspect and audit the working of the Constitution on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Republic.

"Is the Constitution a mere administrative manual which enables the elected governments to claim legitimacy for abuse of power, and allows citizens to convert liberty into license disregarding rights of others? Is it (the Constitution of India) simply another text or penned by ink, or a scared text written in the blood of innumerable martyrs who transcended the barriers of caste, religion, region, ethnicity and language?" the letter read.

Below is the full text of the letter signed by Lt Gen (retd) Harcharanjit Singh Panag, filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, actress Sharmila Tagore, Carnatic music maestro T.M. Krishna, former UGC chairman Sukhdeo Thorat and former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed besides Chelameswar and Quraishi.
