JNU violence: Delhi court calls for status report from police on action taken on FIR   

A Delhi Court has called for a status report from the Crime Branch of Delhi Police on the stage of investigation in the FIR registered with respect to the violence which took place in Jawaharlal Nehru University on January 5, reports legal news website LiveLaw.in.

The Duty Metropolitan Magistrate at Patiala House Courts also allowed an application for early hearing which sought for an investigation into the violence.

On 5th January, 2020, violence was unleashed at Sabarmati Tea Point in JNU, wherein the applicant, Sucharita Sen, a Professor at the University, became a hapless victim and sustained serious injuries which even drew blood from the applicant's head.

The order passed by Duty Metropolitan Magistrate Vipul Sandwar noted the submissions made in the application regarding constant adjournment in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the reference to the Delhi High Court order which stated that since the matter was sensitive in nature and pertained to violence committed in the JNU Campus, "it needs to be probed thoroughly and expeditiously".

It is recorded in the order that the Additional Public Prosecutor for the State submitted to the Court that the status report filed by the Vasant Kunj Police Station states that an FIR under Sections 145/147/148/506/34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of DPDP Act have been registered and transferred to the Crime Branch, Delhi Police, along with the complaint of the applicant.

On hearing the arguments and perusing the documents, the DMM recorded that the only thing that can be ascertained from the submissions and the status report is the registration of the FIR.

Accordingly, the DMM has directed for a status report to be called from the Crime Branch, New Delhi within 7 days, mentioning the details of the FIR registered and the action taken pursuant to it. "Further proceedings shall be subject to the above requisite status report".

The matter is now listed on 18th May.
