Jyotiraditya Scindia’s change of heart: his past ‘praise’ of PM Modi laid bare

While the former Congress leader was effusive in his praise of Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday after formally joining the BJP, he was bitterly critical of him and the Government till recently

Narendra Modi had sent the Rupee from the ICU to the crematorium, said Jyoriraditya Scindia last year while campaigning in the general election. Demonetisation and the implementation of GST were stark examples of misgovernance, he had then said and lambasted the lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh, which, he added, had become a sanctuary for criminals.

Here watch a video of a few speeches delivered by Mr Scindia in which he is scathing in his criticism of the Prime Minister.

Several other statements and tweets by Scindia mocked at the PM. A sample:

  • We have had enough Mann ki Baat…There is a need to listen to what the people want…the Congress model for 10 years was India realising its full (economic) potential and the excess revenue being used to create not islands but oceans of development ( Panel Discussion on ‘India at 71: Hits and misses’)
  • One cannot overstate the fact that the whole #NRC exercise has turned out to be a burlesque. No wonder the BJP will now be seen as distancing itself from it.
  • In these four years, Modi’s welfare strategy has been one of confused priorities, grand announcements and ambitious targets, but ambition is unlikely to yield real benefits in the short term and without significant course correction may cause long-term harm. (May, 2018)
  • Going back and forth on their stand is this govt's second nature. One thing's clear: the @BJP4India is putting up the worst to cover up its misdoings, and the best to prove that it is a "suit boot ki sarkar" (March 9, 2019)
  • The biggest tragedy in India today is that of the educated unemployed. The PM who said he’d create 2 Crore jobs/yr- what has this govt’s track record been? In four years, they’ve created between 4 lac & 1.35 lac jobs/yr; 8 lac Engg grads, only 40% get employed. That is a real tragedy (Mar 4, 2018)
  • What the BJP government does: creates, propagates, circulates and re-circulates fake news. Urge them to focus their energy on development work instead!
  • Rajiv Gandhi decentralized governance. The Narendra Modi and @ChouhanShivraj govts decentralised corruption. The poor has no food; farmer does not get returns of crops or compensation; elderly don’t get pension & the BJP has no worries about it
  • It is a mere hogwash if Govt thinks that by appealing to farmers to implement #ZeroBudgetFarming, it can pursue its illusion of doubling farmers income. This from a Govt which hasn’t let NCRB publish #FarmerSuicides data since 2016.

Even as late as last month, Mr Scindia has been criticising the Modi Government for spreading hate.

On Twitter, several users were quick to call his bluff and pointed out that while he blamed the Congress Government in Madhya Pradesh for not fulfilling the poll pledge of waiving farm loans, he himself had tweeted videos of himself handing out certificates of waivers to the farmers.

Distributed loan waiver certificates worth Rs 10 crore to 1200 farmers today in Karera Assembly constituency, which takes figure for District Shivpuri to Rs 47 crore for 7000 farmers

Some of Mr Scindia’s other tweets:

  • February 26: The situation in Delhi today is the result of a huge failure of duty on the part of the state and central governments. What took them so long to respond to the situation?

  • The @BJP4India leaders have got to stop spreading the politics of hate. Need both the governments to work together and put an end to this before it’s too late!

  • February 24: Business worth Rs 985 crore generated during Gwalior Business Fair. Last year the figure was Rs 515 crore

  • February 14: A year has passed since the unfortunate #PulwamaAttack took place. Has there been a serious investigation? Who was responsible? The govt needs to answer. The least we can do is to not let our martyrs’ sacrifice go in vain.

  • February 13: The Congress manifesto is like a holy book for us, our government is bound to deliver on each promise. I will fight for you if you face any problem
