SC seeks Centre, Assam's response on plea alleging exclusion of transgenders in NRC

The Supreme Court on Monday sought response of the Centre and Assam government on a plea alleging exclusion of around 2000 transgenders in the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

A bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant issued notice to the government on the PIL filed by one Swati Bidhan Baruah.

Baruah, the first transgender judge from Assam, has moved the Supreme Court, citing exclusion of transgenders during the NRC process and at stages subsequent to publication of the final draft.

The police in Jehanabad carried out a raid at the ancestral house of anti-CAA activist Sharjeel Imam, who has been slapped with a sedition case in the national capital for alleged inflammatory speeches he gave at Shaheen Bagh and the Jamia Milia Islamia, a senior official said on Monday.

Two sisters gang-raped by men in cop uniform in UP

Two sisters were raped in Behjoi in Sambhal district on Sunday by men who came dressed as police constables.

According to reports, the men came in a car and barged into the house of the sisters. They blamed the other family members for dealing in spurious liquor and then asked the sisters to accompany them to the police station.

The men took the sisters to an isolated area in a nearby jungle and raped them by turns. They left after committing the crime.

The sisters returned home after some time and informed the family of their ordeal.

The family then went to the Behjoi police station where they were told that no constables had been sent to their home.

A complaint has been lodged and further investigations are underway. The girls have been sent for medical examination.

Air India privatisation: Employee unions to meet in Delhi

Various Air India employee unions will meet here on Monday to discuss proposed privatisation of the debt-laden airline, sources said.

The meeting was scheduled after the government, earlier in the day, announced sale of 100 per cent stake in Air India as it issued the preliminary bid document for the strategic disinvestment.

Representatives of various Air India trade unions will meet here to discuss the government's privatisation plans, sources said.

There are around a dozen recognised trade unions at Air India.

Govt to sell 100 pc stake in Air India; issues bid document

The government on Monday issued the preliminary information memorandum for 100 per cent stake sale in national carrier Air India.

As part of the strategic disinvestment, Air India would also sell 100 per cent stake in low cost airline Air India Express and 50 per cent shareholding in joint venture AISATS, as per the bid document issued on Monday.

Management control of the airline would also be transferred to the successful bidder.

The government has set March 17 as the deadline for submitting the Expression of Interest (EoI).

EY is the transaction adviser for Air India disinvestment process.
