The former London mayor broke his silence to launch his campaign on Wednesday, saying he would only take Britain out of the EU without a deal as a "last resort" as he promised to unify a country deeply divided over Brexit.

Theresa May, who remains prime minister, stepped down as party leader on Friday, having failed to deliver her plan for taking Britain out of the European Union after nearly three years in the post.

Governor's peace meeting in Bengal inconclusive

A meeting called by West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi with four political parties to create a harmonious situation in the state riddled by political violence remained "inconclusive" on Thursday.

Emerging out of the Raj Bhavan, state BJP Vice President Jay Prakash Majumdar said that the Governor came up with a five-point set of suggestions but the representative of the ruling Trinamool Congress said he could not endorse it before talking to Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

Majumdar appreciated Tripathi's initiative and said his party would support any step that would stop the ongoing violence and bring peace.

"He's rightly behind bars. There's an extradition request from the US that will be before the courts tomorrow (Friday), but yesterday (Wednesday) I signed the extradition order and certified it. It will be going in front of the courts tomorrow," Javid told BBC Radio 4.

A 24-year old mother of two children committed suicide on Thursday in Tamil Nadu after she was scolded by her husband and prevented from using the short video-making app.

Anitha, recorded herself as she drank the poison and then sent the video via WhatsApp to her husband, who is in Singapore.

According to media reports, Anitha's husband Pazhanivel did not appreciate his wife's TikTok addiction and had asked her to quit the habit.

India planning its own space station: ISRO chief

India is planning to launch its own space station, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K. Sivan said on Thursday.

The space station, which is estimated to weigh around 20 tonnes, would be an extension of the Gaganyaan mission -- India's first manned mission into space.

"India will set up its separate space station in the next 5-7 years after Gangayaan is successfully completely in 2022," Sivan told reporters. The space station will most likely be used to conduct microgravity experiments, he added.

2 oil tankers hit in Gulf of Oman, all crew evacuated

Two oil tankers were hit in a suspected attack in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday and all crew members onboard were evacuated, the media reported.

The tankers were struck in the same area where the US accused Iran of using naval mines to sabotage four other oil ships in an attack last month, reports say.

The Iranian media said the two tankers departed from the port of Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The ports of Pakistan and Oman both received the distress calls from the oil tankers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Ordering an inquiry into the whole series of events leading to an attack on two junior doctors at the state-run NRS Medical College and Hospital, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using the incident to create communal tension.

No survivors found, IAF confirms

The Indian Air Force on Thursday said that there were no survivors at the crash site of the IAF AN-32 aircraft, located 16 km north of Lipo in Arunachal Pradesh.

The team of rescuers, including 15 mountaineers managed to reach the crash site earlier in the day. The families of the 13 personnel have already been informed that there are no survivors.

Jhelum river water breaches flood alarm level in Kashmir

Due to incessant rains in the Kashmir Valley, the waters of the Jhelum river has breached the flood alarm level of 18 feet on Thursday, authorities said.

Unprecedented snowfall in Sonamarg and heavy downpours in the south Kashmir catchment areas of the Jhelum have swollen most water bodies and mountain streams in the valley.

Flash floods have washed away some bridges built over mountain streams in Bandipora and Tangmarg. The excess water has also inundated apple orchards in Baramulla district.
