Chidambaram, Singhvi criticise govt role in the Arbitration Bill

The Congress on Thursday alleged that the proposed Arbitration Council would be a "sarkari" Council and accused the government of making a "brazen" attempt to take over the process.

During a joint discussion on two bill related to amendments in arbitration laws in Rajya Sabha, the opposition party also demanded that the members of the Council be appointed by a collegium since the government is itself a relentless litigant.

Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and P Chidambaram attacked the government for not doing enough to make India an international hub for arbitration

"It is one point focal bill. It should have been called take over bill. It is an invitation to disaster even if you want to take over. You are taking over in a brazen manner," Singvi said.

The discussion was on Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and The New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill, 2019

Vaiko gets relief from Madras High Court

The Madras High Court on Thursday suspended the one year jail term awarded to MDMK leader and Rajya Sabha member Vaiko in a sedition case.

Hearing the appeal filed by Vaiko, the court suspended the one year sentence handed out by the Special Court for Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly the the appeal is disposed.

The court suggested to Vaiko's counsel to caution his client while making public speeches.

52 criminals eliminated in Meerut zone in 28 months

It may not be 'Ab Tak 56', but it's definitely 'Ab Tak 52'. It reflects the number of criminals eliminated in the Meerut zone during the Yogi Adityanath regime, which is just two months shy of the half-way mark.

Stating that the police are only doing a cleanup job, Prashant Kumar, Additional Director General (ADG) of Police (Meerut zone), said, "We have eliminated many hardcore criminals."

Meerut and Muzaffarnagar districts in Western Uttar Pradesh have been the backyard of organised crime. The Meerut zone, which comprises nine districts, including Meerut, Ghaziabad and Muzaffarnagar, has seen the maximum fatal encounters among the seven zones in the state.

The ADG said 945 criminals were shot, injured and arrested after encounters in the Meerut zone in the last two-and-a-half years, which was a major achievement for the police.

Udhampur district hospital first in J-K to get NQAS certification

The district hospital in Udhampur has become the first government-run health facility in Jammu and Kashmir to get the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification in recognition of its high standards, officials said.

The hospital scored an overall rating of 85 per cent and met the criteria required for achieving the NQAS recognition, they said.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has accorded the NQAS certification to the District hospital, Udhampur, in recognition of its high standards of quality and performance maintained by it, the officials said.

Rains keep mercury, pollution in check in New Delhi

The national capital witnessed a fresh bout of rains Thursday that resulted in a drop in temperatures and pollution levels.

The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides official figures for the city, reported 12.1 mm rains overnight. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, it measured 3.6 mm precipitation.

The weather stations at Palam gauged 61.0 mm rains overnight and 8.7 mm from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. The observatories at Lodhi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar received 1.7, 0.7, 3.4 mm of rainfall, respectively.

More than 65 mm precipitation at any place is considered heavy rain, officials said.

NCC, Scouts to train madarasa students in UP

To inculcate the spirit of patriotism and nationalism among youth, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to involve the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Scouts in training of students of madarasas.

Baldev Aulakh, minister of state for minority affairs, said here NCC and Scout training will ensure physical fitness, and children will also learn about nation and patriotism at these camps.

"We have decided to provide NCERT books at madarasas. If they want to study any other language, like Urdu, Farsi, or anything else, they can do so along with NCERT books," he said.

The Yogi government, he said wanted to pave the way for smart madarasas by distributing laptops and providing smart techniques of education. "In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, we want to ensure that all marginalised and minority communities get better education and good jobs," he said.

Iran seizes foreign oil tanker, crew: State TV

Iran has seized a "foreign oil tanker" carrying one million liters of "smuggled fuel" and 12 crew members near the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, the state TV reported on Thursday.

According to the semi-official Fars news agency, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces ambushed the tanker on Sunday, in the latest incident in a series of dramatic developments as tensions increase between the US and Iran over the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Press TV said that the oil tanker was intercepted south of Iran's Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

3 Maoists killed in Jharkhand, 2 AK-47s seized

Three Maoists were killed in a gun-battle with the security forces in Jharkhand's Lohardaga district on Thursday, the police said. Two AK-47s were seized from them.

After receiving a tip-off about presence of Maoists in Sahedapat jungle, the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a joint operation.

On spotting security forces, Maoists started firing. The security forces retaliated, killing three of them, said Alok Priyadarshi, Lohardaga Superintendent of Police.

TMC's Dutta quits as Bidhannagar mayor, to decide next move

Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator and Bidhannagar Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta on Thursday resigned from the civic body post, complaining lack of cooperation from the West Bengal government.

Dutta's announcement came a day after the Calcutta High Court quashed a notification by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation's joint commissioner for convening a councillors' meeting to move no-confidence motion against him.

"I have always worked for the welfare of poor and working class people and would continue to do so till my last breath. I did not get enough cooperation from the state government. As a people's representative if I am not able to work as per the Municipal Corporation Act, I have no right to hold on to the mayor's post. Hence, I have tendered my resignation," Dutta told reporters.

Sensex tanks 318 pts; Nifty cracks below 11,600

Snapping its three-day rising streak, equity benchmark BSE Sensex slumped 318 points Thursday, dragged by a sell-off in index heavyweights RIL, TCS, ICICI Bank and SBI.

The 30-share index settled 318.18 points or 0.81 per cent lower at 38,897.46. It hit an intra-day low of 38,861.25 and a high of 39,204.47.

Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty broke below the 11,600 mark, ending 90.60 points or 0.78 per cent down at 11,596.90. During the day, the index hit a low of 11,582.40 and a high of 11,677.15.

Yes Bank was the biggest loser in the Sensex pack in absolute terms, cracking 12.85 per cent, after the company reported a massive 92.44 per cent slump in consolidated net profit to Rs 95.56 crore.

ONGC, Tata Motors, M&M, Maruti, Vedanta, Bajaj Auto, TCS, SBI and HCL Tech lost up to 4.24 per cent.

Ebola outbreak in Congo declared 'health emergency'

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has declared the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The announcement was made on Wednesday following a meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee for Ebola virus disease in Congo, the fourth of its kind since the outbreak was declared on August 1, 2018, Xinhua reported.
