Let court decide on conspiracy against me: Alencherry

Cardinal of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church Archbishop George Alencherry on Sunday refused to comment on the alleged conspiracy to defame him, after a person was arrested and remanded to judicial custody for forging bank documents in his name.

"Let the police and the court decide, if there was a conspiracy behind the fake documents. I am not going to come to any conclusions now," said the Cardinal.

The case relates to alleged forging of documents for bank transactions by a group of priests and the laity to defame Alencherry.

The police team investigating the case questioned a few Catholic priests and based on their statements picked one Aditiyan on Saturday and recorded his arrest on Sunday. Aditiyan has been remanded to judicial custody till May 31.

Four killed while cleaning water pumping station in Gujarat

Four sanitation workers died after inhaling poisonous gas while cleaning a storm water pumping station in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city, a police official said on Sunday.

The mishap took place in Odhav locality late Saturday night when a worker went into the well of the civic-run Ambikanagar pumping station and fell unconscious after inhaling a toxic gas, he said.

Three other labourers then rushed in to help him, but they also inhaled the gas and died on the spot, the official at Odhav police station said.

Bangladesh ex-PM Zia trapped between life and death

Jailed former prime minister Khaleda Zia is trapped between life and death as her health has massively deteriorated over the last week due to unhealthy environment, according to her Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Demanding the immediate release of the 73-year-old three-time former prime minister, the BNP standing committee member Jamiruddin Sircar said that due to the loneliness and lack of proper treatment, Zia is suffering from various ailments including heart disease.

A body of an unidentified woman was found in Bundi district on Sunday, police said.

Prime facie, it seems that the woman was bludgeoned to death on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, police said, adding that the body was found under the Ardana railway over bridge under Kapren Police Station of Bundi district.

Curfew continues for fourth day in J&K's Bhaderwah

Curfew continued for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir's Bhaderwah town.

Authorities have ordered a magisterial probe into the death of a civilian - Nayeem Shah - whose body was recovered by the police from the outskirts of Bhaderwah town on Thursday.

Clashes broke out between two groups following Shah's murder which one group said had been done by cow vigilantes. Police has denied the involvement of any cow vigilantes.

American multinational ExxonMobil evacuates 30 foreign engineers from Iraqi oil field

American multinational oil and gas company ExxonMobil announced that 30 of its foreign engineers were evacuated from the West Qurna 1 oil field in Basra, Iraq.

The evacuation took place over two days and some of the engineers were sent to Dubai, while most were laced in the company’s main headquarters in Basra.
