Woman killed by speeding car in south Delhi

A 50-year-old woman was crushed to death by a speeding car on Monday while she was crossing the road in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar, the police said.

The accident occurred at around 9 a.m. when the deceased, who was later identified as Munish Devi, was going to her workplace in Lajpat Nagar.

"A resident of Trilokpuri in east Delhi, Munish Devi was crossing the road when she was crushed by a speeding car," Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Chinmoy Biswal said.

The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has issued a notice to Dean of BYL Nair Hospital seeking a report on the action taken in connection with Payal Tadvi suicide case on Monday January 27.

Payal Tadvi had committed suicide on May 22 after facing harassment at the hands of three senior doctors.

A man called for questioning at the Bawana police station in Delhi committed suicide by jumping off from the balcony, the police said on Monday.

Balraj had been called for questioning on Sunday regarding an attempt to murder case against his son, a police official said.

Punjab again posts Vijay Partap to head SIT probing sacrilege cases

The Punjab government on Monday again posted Inspector General of Police Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh to head the Special Investigative Team (SIT) probing the involvement of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal in the sacrilege cases and police firing in 2015.

Vijay Pratap was relieved from the post on the directions of the Election Commission.

Two people were killed and many others injured in Behbal Kalan village on October 15, 2015, when police resorted to unprovoked firing on hundreds of people protesting the alleged desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in Bargari village in Faridkot a few days earlier. The incident came a day after police used force to disperse agitators in Kotkapura village.

AAP names Sanjay Singh as Odisha in-charge (18:36)

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday appointed Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh as its Odisha in-charge, days after it appointed him as the party's Rajasthan in-charge.

The decision was taken by party leader Arvind Kejriwal at a meeting of the party's Political Affairs Committee. Singh is already in-charge of the AAP work in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Delhi orders fire inspection of coaching centres

Taking a precautionary measures following death of 23 students in a fire in Surat, the Delhi government on Monday directed the Fire Department to inspect the buildings from where coaching centres were being run.

Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain asked the Delhi Fire Service to “take strict action as per the fire safety standards and guidelines to prevent recurrence of such accidents”.

He said all the coaching centres operating from high-rises should be inspected first and later the others. “In the first phase, all coaching centres operating in high-rise buildings (more than four floors excluding the stilt floor) shall be inspected by the Director (Fire Service),” the order read.

86.29% students pass class 12 board examinations in West Bengal

An estimated 86.29 per cent out of the nearly 8 lakh students passed the Higher Secondary examinations in West Bengal this year, the results of which were declared on Monday.

West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday congratulated all successful candidates of Higher Secondary Examination as well as their teachers and guardians.

Out of a total of 7,77,266 candidates, who appeared for the examinations this year, 86.29 per cent students passed, the president of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, Mohua Das, told a press meet.

Maharashtra students protest against medico's suicide

The Students Federation of India (SFI) and other student organisations staged vociferous protests against the recent suicide of a post-graduate woman medical student Dr Payal Tadvi due to alleged casteist abuse in a Mumbai hospital and demanded stringent action against the culprits on Monday.

This is the first time in Maharashtra that any post-graduate medico has taken the extreme step of ending her life after alleged harassment on grounds of her caste background, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) General Secretary Dr. Deepak Mundhe told IANS.

"Since the past three-four years, we have seen increase in such comments against the students coming from the reserved categories, which is very unfortunate," Mundhe rued.

3 injured in powerful blast claimed by Islamic State in Bangladesh

A police officer and two others were injured in a powerful blast claimed by the Islamic State in Bangladesh's capital.

The explosives that lead to the blast in a police pick-up van in Dhaka's Malibagh on Sunday night might have been planted, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said on Monday.

"We think it (the explosive) was kept in the car and not hurled at the police," he said while talking to reporters after visiting the injured at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Taliban attacks kill 10 Afghan troops, 4 police officials

A roadside bombing claimed by the Taliban killed 10 Afghan soldiers in the country's west while insurgent attacks on security checkpoints in northern Afghanistan killed four policemen, local officials said on Monday.

The soldiers were driving back to base after picking up their salaries in the country's western Farah province. They were travelling in a Humvee when the explosion took place on Sunday afternoon in the Bala Buluk district, said Shah Mahmmod Nahimi, a provincial councilman.

Suspected IED destroyed along Jammu-Poonch highway

A major tragedy was averted Monday with timely detection of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) along the Jammu-Poonch National Highway, prompting suspension of traffic for nearly one-and-a-half hours, officials said.

Man gets 2-year RI for molesting minor girl in Maharashtra

A Maharashtra court has sentenced a 27-year-old man to two-year rigorous imprisonment for molesting a teenaged girl.

Special judge (POCSO court) S A Sinha in her order on Friday also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the accused — Vilas Kakade.

According to the prosecution, Kakade used to stalk the 15-year-old girl on way to her school in Manpada area of Thane city following which she informed her parents, who warned the accused.

On November 2, 2017, the accused molested the Class 10 girl when she was returning home from her school. He also slit his wrist with a knife and told her she would be blamed if he committed suicide. On January 30, 2018, the accused again approached the girl when she was returning home from school and threatened her.

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) president Prem Singh Tamang, popularly known as P S Golay, on Monday took oath as the chief minister of Sikkim.
