Day after Advani's snub, Joshi meets party veteran

A day after BJP veteran L.K. Advani said that his party never regarded political foes as "anti-nationals", senior leader and former party President Murli Manohar Joshi met him on Friday.

What transpired between the party veterans is not clear but it is widely believed that the two leaders discussed the situation wherein the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denied them ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

BHU student murder: 3 arrested, 2 absconding

Three persons have been arrested and sent to jail while two others are absconding in connection with the murder of a Banaras Hindu University (BHU) student, police said on Friday.

On Tuesday, four bike-borne men shot dead Gaurav Singh, who was pursuing Masters in Computer Application, in front of the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hostel in the campus premises.

Among those absconding are the university's Chief Proctor Royana Singh. Three others in the killer gang are yet to be identified, a police officer said.

India has strongly criticised the lack of transparency in the procedures of decision-making by the UN Security Council's Sanctions Committees, and said the practice of keeping in secrecy the failed efforts of proscribed terrorists to get themselves removed from the world body's list of designated entities has “no legal sanction.” Last month, government sources in New Delhi said that the United Nations rejected an appeal of 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed to remove his name from its list of banned terrorists.

Saeed, chief of UN-designated terrorist organisation Jamaat-ud-Dawa, was banned on December 10, 2008 by the United Nations Security Council after the Mumbai terror attacks in which 166 people were killed.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday stayed the appointment of two members of Lokayukta in Tamil Nadu

Hearing a petition opposing the appointment of two non-judicial members, retired IAS officer M. Rajaram and advocate K. Arumugam, the court issued and interim stay on their appointment.

Gangrape accused jailed for 20 years in Jharkhand

A court in Jharkhand's Jamtara district on Friday awarded 20 year imprisonment to two persons found guilty of gang-raping a girl.

According to a lawyer, Additional District Judge Kamal Kumar Srivastav had found them guilty on Thursday.

On Friday, the court sentenced Ram Das Hembrom and Marlin Marandi to 20 years in jail. Three others were sentenced to eight years in jail: Bhim Marandi, Som Marandi and Saheblal Marandi.

The youths were accused of forcibly entering the house of the victim, taking her away and gang-raping her.

Siblings drown while feeding fish in river Beas Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

Two teenaged siblings drowned in the Beas river near Kaleshwar Mahadev temple in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district on Friday, a district official said.

The bodies of Sandeep (17) and his sister Nisha (14), residents of Gahlian village in Dehar subdivision, were retrieved from the river by the locals, he added.

The duo had gone to feed the fish when Nisha slipped and fell in the river. Her brother tried to save her but both of them drowned, he said further.

SC declines interim stay on Electoral Bond Scheme

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to grant an interim stay on the operation of Electoral Bond Scheme, and directed the petitioner NGO objecting to the scheme to approach the court with an appropriate application.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that the matter requires a detailed hearing and posted it for next hearing on April 10.

Incidentally, the polling for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections is scheduled to take place on April 11.

Former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh Friday told the Supreme Court that the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal was trying to prevent her from entering the state as she is contesting Lok Sabha polls on BJP's ticket from West Midnapore's Ghatal constituency.

Bankrupt bizman jumps before Delhi Metro train

A 32-year-old businessman, who recently suffered losses in his enterprise, on Friday attempted to commit suicide by jumping before a Delhi Metro train, a police officer said.

At about 1 p.m. Sanant Goel, a resident of Panchkula near Chandigarh, jumped before a Metro train in west Delhi's Tikri Kalan station.

Goel said he had been depressed for some days over his business suffering heavy losses. He had come to Delhi to meet his sister.

Rupee extends slide, drops 6 paise to 69.23 vs USD

The rupee skidded 6 paise to finish at 69.23 per US dollar on Friday, largely owing to increasing demand for the greenback from importers.

Forex traders said strengthening of the dollar against key currencies overseas also kept the rupee under pressure, though persistent foreign fund inflows restricted the fall.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the domestic unit opened at 69.11. It moved in a range of 69.33 to 69.05 before finally ending at 69.23, down 6 paise over its previous close.

Chandigarh: 8 injured in furnace mishap in Bhilai Steel Plant Durg

Eight persons were on Friday injured after a portion of the roof of a blast furnace in Bhilai Steel Plant here was damaged, police said.

The incident took place at around noon when these persons were working in the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) Section 1 in the plant, located in Bhilai town, a police official told PTI.

"At least eight persons sustained burn injuries in the incident. We are probing the incident," the official said.

In a statement, Bhilai Steel Plant authorities said that at around 11:55 am, the right hearth of the twin-hearth furnace of SMS 1 developed sudden pressure, which in turn damaged a portion of the roof, leading to hot dust and splinters spreading near the furnace area.

SC says Bengaluru sewage water to be used for irrigation

The Supreme Court on Friday lifted a stay it imposed earlier on the Karnataka government's scheme to pump secondary treated water from sewage plants in Bengaluru to minor irrigation tanks in the water-starved districts of Kolar and Chikkaballapur.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the city agencies, including the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the Karnataka Pollution Control Board, had said that the water was not fit for human consumption and would be used only to recharge the groundwater in the areas.

2 killed in building collapse in Karnataka

At least two people were killed and about a dozen labourers injured on Friday when an under-construction building collapsed at the APMC Yard at Yashwantapura in Bengaluru, police said.

The injured have been rushed to a nearby government hospital while the bodies of the victims have been sent for autopsy.

According to police, construction of a multi-level car parking was going on at the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard in Yashwantapura.

The BSE benchmark Sensex jumped over 200 points in early trade on Friday led by gains in realty, metal, oil and gas and banking stocks amid positive global cues on hopes of a trade deal between the US and China.

The BSE gauge Sensex was trading 200.69 points, or 0.52 per cent, higher at 38,885.41. The 30-share Sensex index settled 192.40 points, or 0.49 per cent, lower at 38,684.72 in its previous session.

Similarly, the NSE benchmark Nifty rose 60.45 points, or 0.52 per cent, to 11,658.45 in early session.
