AES outbreak: 12 kids die in Muzaffarpur
At least 12 children have died in the past one week of suspected Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, while 15 are being treated at the city's two hospitals.
Five children died of suspected AES and JE over the past 24 hours, while 12 new patients were admitted, said a District Health official on Saturday.
Some 21 children were admitted at the Shri Krishna Memorial College Hospital (SKMCH) and 14 were admitted at Kejriwal Hospital on Friday.
"Of the 12 children who died in the past week, the death of two by AES has been confirmed," said District Civil Surgeon S.P.Singh. "We are investigating the reasons for the other deaths," he added.

Power failure disrupts services on Delhi Metro's Yellow Line
Services on the Delhi Metro's Yellow Line were affected Saturday after a major power failure on a section of the corridor, officials said.
The power failure took place between 5.00 pm-5.30 pm, following which services were suspended immediately between Udyog Bhawan and Model Town metro station. However, services on part of the section were restored after some time and trains are currently being operated in two separate loops.
Yellow Line connects Samaypur Badli in Delhi to HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon.

Two siblings were charred to death when a hut caught fire in Jodhpur on Saturday, police said.
The incident took place at Chadi village under the Bojasar police station.
Sunil (6) and her sister Sushila (8) were inside the hut when the fire broke out.
Before they could come out, a burning portion of the thatched roof fell on them, police said.

The Indian Army on Saturday distanced itself from the controversy surrounding the dagger insignia on Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni's gloves, saying it had nothing to do with it.
Dhoni's gloves sported the “Balidan badge” of the parachute regiment's special force during India's opening world cup match against South Africa in Southampton in England on May 5.
Talking to reporters after a passing-out parade at the Indian Military Academy, GOC-in-C (South-Western Command) Lt Gen Cherish Matheson said it was Dhoni's personal decision to wear the Army insignia on his gloves and the Army had nothing to do with it.

The vigilance organisation was looking for records of nearly 1,200 appointments allegedly made at the behest of political masters of the previous PDP-BJP government in the state and during Ahmad's tenure, they said.
The sleuths raided the bank's corporate headquarters at M A Road soon after the state government dismissed Ahmad and appointed executive president RK Chibber as the bank's interim chairman, the officials said.

Naxals torch bus in C'garh after asking passengers to alight
Naxals torched a bus in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, after asking the passengers to alight, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred late on Friday evening between Kutru and Farsegarh villages when the private passenger bus was on its way to Bedre from Bijapur town, a senior police official said.
Around a dozen Maoists, some of them armed, stopped the bus belonging to Jai Bhawani Travels, and set it ablaze after allowing passengers to get off, he said.
None of the passengers or crew was harmed in the incident. However, the bus was completely damaged in the incident, the official added.
Security forces have rushed to the spot and combing operations to apprehend the Naxals involved in the incident were underway, he said.

With Indians across all paths of life coming together and showing their support for former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni after the International Cricket Council (ICC) asked him to remove the "Balidaan Badge" from his wicket keeping gloves, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) running Indian cricket had sent in a request to the ICC asking the game's parent body to allow Dhoni to have the logo on his gloves. But the request has been rejected.
Sources in the know of developments said that the ICC has made it clear that it is not possible to approve the gloves with the ‘Balidaan Badge'.
The ICC has told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that the regulations for ICC events do not permit any individual message and that the logo also breaches the regulations in relation to what is permitted on wicket keeping gloves.

Monsoon has hit Kerala coast: IMD
After a delay of a week, monsoon hit the Kerala coast on Saturday, marking the official commencement of the four-month rainfall season in the country.
"Monsoon has made an onset over Kerala today (June 8)," said India Meteorological Department's Director General-designate Mrutyunjay Mohapatra. Several parts of Kerala have started receiving a good amount of rainfall.
The news will augur well for the country as large parts have been witnessing agriculture distress and water levels in reservoirs in west and south India have dipped to low levels.

5th victim of Uri gas cylinder blast dies in Delhi
The fifth victim of a gas cylinder blast in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri died on Saturday in a hospital in New Delhi, officials said.
Four members of a family, including a woman and her three daughters, had died earlier after a cooking gas cylinder exploded in their house in Uri border town of Baramulla district on May 27.
Authorities had shifted the fifth victim of the family, a six-year old boy, to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi for specialized treatment on Thursday.

Man lynched by anti-drug body members; scribe attacked during violence
One person, claimed to be a drug peddler, was allegedly beaten to death by members of an anti- drug trafficking body in Manipur's Imphal East district, following which a mob ransacked the organisation's office and the residence of its president, police said on Saturday.
A journalist was also assaulted when he, along with other scribes, went to cover the mob violence. Members of the Anti-Drug Joint Committee had picked up Mohammad Helim from his house on late on Thursday night claiming that he was a drug peddler, police said. They allegedly assaulted him during 'interrogation' leading to his death, the police said.

Three Pakistani army officers and one soldier were killed after a roadside bomb targeting a military vehicle exploded in the troubled North Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan.
The IED, targeting the military vehicle, was planted at a roadside on Friday in Kharkamar area in the district, the Army said in a statement.
"Three officers and a soldier were killed while four soldiers were injured," the statement from the army's media wing the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

A Bangladeshi immigrant, who allegedly heaped praise on the Islamic State group and Osama bin Laden, has been charged on Friday after he was accused of plotting a grenade attack on the bustling tourist-clogged Times Square in the US, authorities said.
Ashiqul Alam, 22, was arrested on Thursday after arranging through an undercover agent to buy a pair of semiautomatic pistols with obliterated serial numbers and surveilled the popular Manhattan district to identify the best place for the attack, the the Justice Department said in a statement.
Alam who underwent an eye surgery to improve his vision was nervous about his eyeglasses falling off his face during the terror strike and creating an embarrassing debacle," according to federal charging documents. The Bangladeshi immigrant from Queens zeroed in on attacking New York City.
Infant trapped in Punjab borewell for over 40 hours
A massive operation continued for the third day on Saturday to rescue a two-year-old boy who fell into a 150-foot deep abandoned borewell in a village in Punjab's Sangrur district, officials said.
A movement in his body was noticed at 5 a.m., almost 40 hours after the incident.
A parallel tunnel is being dig to reach the child, Fatehveer Singh, who is turning two on June 10, believed to be stuck at a depth of 110 feet in the borewell that has a nine-inch diameter, they said.
The parallel tunnel still needs digging of 45-50 feet and it is going manually as mechanical digging may lead to caving in of a large nearby portion, said a rescuer.
JeM militant killed in J&K gunfight
One Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) militant was killed on Saturday in a gunfight with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said.
According to police sources, the slain militant has been identified as Iqbal Ahmad of Anantnag's Dooru area. The gunfight took place in Nowgam village of Verinag area.
"The militant's body has been recovered. Search operation is still going on in the area," the sources added.
Formalities in process to repatriate bodies of 12 Indians killed in bus accident in Dubai
The Indian Consulate in Dubai is in the process of completing formalities related to forensics and other documentation required to repatriate the bodies of the 12 Indians who were among the 17 killed in a horrific road accident here when a bus coming from Oman entered a restricted lane and rammed into a low-clearance sign.
Nine persons were also seriously injured when the driver of the bus, carrying mostly Eid vacationers and coming from Oman's capital Muscat to Dubai, wrongly entered a road not designated for buses towards Al Rashidiya metro station on Thursday evening.
Eleven clearance certificates have been issued by forensics, while one forensic report is pending from the authorities, Vipul, India's Consul General in Dubai, tweeted late Friday.
