COVID-19: 18 test positive in Goa orphanage

An orphanage was on Sunday declared a micro containment zone in Goa's Ponda taluka after 18 people tested positive for COVID-19, an official said.

The samples of 45 students and 17 staff from 'Matrucchaya' orphanage for girls in Kavlem, some 10 kilometres from Ponda town, were taken for testing and reports of 18 returned positive after which it was declared a micro containment zone, South District Magistrate Ruchika Katyal said.

All 18 cases are asymptomatic, and a rapid response team has been deployed to monitor and assess the situation, Katyal added.

Minor fire breaks out at mall in southwest Delhi

A minor fire broke out at a food court in Ambience Mall in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area on Sunday, officials of the Delhi Fire Service said.

The blaze has been brought under control, they said, adding that no one was injured in the incident.

A call regarding the fire was received around 11.20 am after which six fire tenders were rushed to the spot, officials said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Ingit Pratap Singh said a fire broke out in a restaurant on the third floor of the mall. A short circuit in the air-conditioning system is suspected to be the cause of fire, he said.

Four held for theft of vehicles

Police on Sunday claimed to have busted a gang of vehicle thieves with the arrest of four people.

According to police, they recovered six trucks, two cars and a mini-truck worth Rs 3 crore from them during a raid in the Transport Nagar here.

According to SSP Abhishek Yadav, the vehicles were stolen from Punjab and Rajasthan.

Odisha reports 98 new COVID-19 cases, tally at 3,38,817

Odishas COVID-19 tally on Sunday surged to 3,38,817 after 98 more people tested positive for the infection, while one more fatality, after a gap of eight days, pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 1,919, a health department official said.

Of the new cases, 58 were reported from different quarantine centres, while 40 fresh infections were detected during contact tracing.

Khurda district reported the highest number of new cases at 15, followed by Cuttack (9) and Mayurbhanj (8), he said.

"Regret to inform the demise of a 15 yr Male COVID-19 positive patient of Khurda who was also suffering from Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma with immunocompromised status," the Health and Family Welfare department tweeted.

Renowned Odissi dancer Laxmipriya Mohapatra passes away

Eminent Odissi dancer Laxmipriya Mohapatra, the wife of legendary Odissi dance guru late Kelucharan Mohapatra, passed away at her residence here on Saturday night. She was 86.

Mohapatra was suffering from age related ailments for a long time, family sources said on Sunday.

Several dignitaries, including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, expressed grief at Mohapatra's demise.

The Chief Minister paid rich tributes to late Laxmipriya Mohapatra while remembering her great contribution to the field of Odissi dance and her entire family for promoting the dance form.

The Chief Minister also announced a state funeral for late Mohapatra, who will be cremated in Puri on Sunday.

The Chief Minister also conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family.

UP woman shot dead by jilted lover

In a tragic incident, a young woman was allegedly shot dead by a married man in the Nagla Lalman village after she refused to continue her relationship with him.

The accused has been arrested by the police and sent to judicial custody after being produced in court.

Kalpana, 21, was found shot dead in the field on Friday evening, around 300 meters from her house, after she had gone to relieve herself.

Weather to remain inclement in J&K, Ladakh for 4 days

Minimum temperatures throughout the valley rose above the freezing point on Sunday amid an adverse weather advisory issued by the Met Department predicting a four-day long spell of rain/snow in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

"Two Western Disturbances (WDs) approaching Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas are likely to cause heavy rain/snow mainly in upper reaches of Kashmir (Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Baramulla, Bandipora (Gurez and Tulial Valley) and Kupwara (Karnah sector), Shopian, Qazigund-Banihal axis, Pirpanjal range of Jammu division, Drass (Gumri and Minamarg) and Zanskar subdivision of Ladakh," the Department advisory said.

Srinagar recorded 7.4, Pahalgam 2.8 and Gulmarg 2.0 degrees Celsius as their minimum temperatures on Sunday.

Leh town had minus 3.1, Kargil minus 3.6 and Drass minus 7.6 as the night's lowest temperature.

Jammu city had 16.8, Katra 16.4, Batote 10.4, Banihal 7.2 and Bhaderwah 7.5 as the minimum temperature.
