Everyone above 60 years of age and those over 45 years and having other illnesses will be able to get COVID-19 vaccine from March 1 for free at government facilities and for a charge at many private hospitals, the government said on Wednesday.

Announcing the next phase of India's vaccination drive, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said a proposal to this effect was approved at a meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"While the vaccine will be given for free at government centres, it will be available for a charge, to be decided later, at many private hospitals," the minister said at a post-Cabinet media briefing.

UP high school student gang-raped, stabbed

In yet another shocking crime in Uttar Pradesh, a high school girl student in Mankapur Kotwali area of Gonda district was gang-raped and then stabbed by four men.

The girl was returning home from school on Tuesday evening when she was waylaid by four accused and dragged to a sugarcane field.

The four men, one of whom belongs to her village, raped her by turns and then stabbed her on the hand, warning her not to report the incident.

The girl returned to her home and informed her parents after which she lodged a complaint with the police.

Allahabad HC launches virtual court for traffic offences

The Allahabad High Court has launched a virtual court at the Allahabad district court for the disposal of the cases related to road traffic violation, Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) and Integration of Civil Court with Land Records (Bhulekh) through online mode.

The virtual court was e-inaugurated by Chief Justice Govind Mathur on Tuesday.

The ICJS has been introduced to facilitate speedy justice through data exchange between the courts, police/prosecution, jails and the forensic labs while the integration of civil court with land records will help resolve property disputes quickly.

Encounter breaks out in J&K's Anantnag district

An encounter broke out between the terrorists and security forces in the Shalgul forest area in South Kashmir's Anantnag district on Wednesday, officials said.

The gunfight took place after security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the basis of a specific information about the presence of terrorists.

As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where the terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter.

"Encounter has started at Shalgul forest area of Srigufwara, Anantnag. Police and Army are on the job," police said.

Global COVID cases top 112 million: Johns Hopkins

The total number of global COVID-19 cases has topped 112 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.48 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Wednesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 112,091,851 and 2,484,988 respectively.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 28,259,648 and 502,594 respectively, according to the CSSE.

3 new COVID-19 cases in Mizoram, tally rises to 4,413

Three more persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram in the last 24 hours, pushing the tally to 4,413, an official said on Wednesday.

Two cases were reported from Aizawl district and one from Lunglei district, he said.

Mizoram now has 24 active COVID-19 cases, while 4,379 people have recovered from the virus.

The coronavirus death toll in the state is 10.

The state has tested 2,28,634 samples for COVID-19 so far, including 936 on Tuesday.

Andamans reports one new COVID-19 case

The coronavirus tally in Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 5,016 as one more person has tested positive for the disease in the union territory, a health department official said on Wednesday.

The new case was detected during contact tracing, he said.

The archipelago now has five active COVID-19 cases and all the patients are in the South Andaman district. The other two districts of the union territory North and Middle Andaman and Nicobar are COVID-19 free as both dont have any active coronavirus case at present.

The overall COVID situation is under control in the archipelago as the local administration has been strict to ensure that health safety protocols are followed to contain the spread of the disease, he said.

Rape accused flees from police custody

One of the accused persons arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a minor girl in a village here, on Tuesday escaped from police custody in Allahabad.

Superintendent of Police Abhinandan said that Gulshan, an accused person along with another person was arrested on February 20 following an encounter. Gulshan got leg injury in the encounter, after which he was admitted to SRN Hospital in Allahabad. On Tuesday morning, he gave a slip to two cops posted there.

UK records another 8,489 coronavirus cases, 548 deaths

Another 8,489 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 4,134,639, according to official figures released Tuesday.

The country also reported another 548 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 121,305. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test, the Xinhua news agency reported.
