PV Sindhu won the first game against China's He Bing Jiao in the women's singles bronze medal match 21-13 to take 1-0 lead. The Indian shuttler is in with a chance to become the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals.

Assam on Saturday reported 19 more COVID-19 deaths, which took the toll to 5,260, according to a bulletin issued by the National Health Mission.

The coronavirus caseload in the northeastern state mounted 5,66,198 with 989 new cases, the lowest since May, it said.

Assam now has 11,975 active cases.

At least 1,480 people were cured of the disease during the day, taking the total number of recoveries to 5,47,616, it said.

Thane has reported 350 new cases of coronavirus, taking the infection count in the Maharashtra district to 5,44,766, an official said on Sunday.

Besides these new cases recorded on Saturday, eight more people also succumbed to the viral infection, which raised the death toll in the district to 11,035.

The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 2.02 per cent, he added.
