Spanish golfer Jon Rahm has tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time in two months and been knocked out of the Olympics only a few hours after American golfer Bryson DeChambeau met the same fate.

The back-to-back coronavirus shockers came on the second full day of action in Tokyo and put a damper on the golf tournament. The sport is scheduled to begin Thursday and will be without the last two U.S. Open champions.

DeChambeau won in 2020 at Winged Foot. Rahm took the title last month at Torrey Pines in a comeback of sorts. He was only two weeks removed from building a six-shot lead after the third round of the Memorial only to be told he had tested positive for COVID-19 and had to withdraw.

Thane has reported 347 new cases of coronavirus, raising the infection count in the Maharashtra district to 5,42,587, an official said on Sunday.

Besides these new cases recorded on Saturday, the virus also claimed the lives of 14 more people, which pushed the death toll in the district to 10,969.

The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane is 2.02 per cent, he added.

In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,28,9150, while the death toll has reached 3,108, another official said.

The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands remained unchanged at 7,525 as no fresh infection was reported on Sunday, a health bulletin said.

Three more people were cured of the disease, taking the total number of recoveries to 7,382, it said.

The Union territory now has 14 active cases, while 129 patients have succumbed to the infection so far.

The administration has tested over 4.31 lakh samples for COVID-19, and inoculated over 2.81 lakh people to date, it added.

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Munand area of the south Kashmir district on Sunday morning following inputs about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

As the forces were conducting searches in the area, the militants fired upon them, he said.

The forces retaliated, ensuing an encounter in which one militant was killed, the official said.

The operation is on and further details are awaited, he added.
