Kidnapped Delhi jeweller rescued from Meerut, 2 held

Delhi Police have rescued a jeweller kidnapped and held hostage at a house in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh and arrested two persons, a senior police officer said on Saturday.

Rs 3 lakh given as ransom money by the family of Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Karol Bagh, was recovered and mastermind Nitin Kansal and his accomplice Pankaj Goel were arrested.

On Wednesday, Mukesh's wife lodged a complaint at Prasad Nagar police station that her 50-yer-old husband had left for his shop on Tuesday morning after called to the INA Market by some unknown persons. In the afternoon, she said she received a call from her husband's mobile that Mukesh was in Bulandshahr and asked her to reach Shahdara Metro Station with Rs 1-2 lakh, some jewellery and his chequebook.

Ex-MLA Karunakaran passes away

Former CPI(M) MLA, K C Karunakaran passes away on Saturday due to age related illness, party sources said.

He was 74 and is survived by a son. His wife predeceased him three years ago, they said.

Karunakaran represented Singanallur constituency in the city from 2001 to 2006 and was the state executive member of the party for the last 23 years and the district CPM secretary from 1997 to 2001.

The body was kept at the party office for the party cadre and public to pay homage before the cremation in Papanaicken Palayam, they said.

South Korea reports 72 new Covid-19 cases

South Korea on Saturday reported 72 new coronavirus, marking the third consecutive day that the number has remained below 100, raising the overall tally to 24,548, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
