Former HP speaker Tulsi Ram passes away at 78

Former Himachal Pradesh assembly speaker and senior BJP leader Tulsi Ram passed away at Palampur following a prolonged illness, a party spokesman said on Tuesday.

He was 78.

Tulsi Ram breathed his last at Palampur in Kangra district on Monday night, the spokesman said.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, Speaker Vipin Parmar and BJP state president Suresh Kashyap condoled the death of Tulsi Ram.

Tulsi Ram was the speaker of the Himachal Pradesh assembly from 2007 to 2012 and was elected MLA thrice in 1990, 1998 and 2007 from the Bharmour assembly constituency.

He was a great statesman who worked tirelessly for the cause of vulnerable sections of society, the chief minister said.

Tulsi Ram's contributions for the development of the Bharmour assembly constituency were immense and he would always be remembered, Thakur said.

COVID deaths in US surpass past 5 flu seasons combined

COVID-19 has been responsible for more US deaths than the past five flu seasons combined.

According to a McKinsey report, 80 per cent of the deaths are people aged 65 plus similar to past influenza seasons.

The report said older people face higher mortality from Covid-19 compared to younger people. 25 per cent of US deaths have happened in nursing homes and long term care facilities.

The distribution of new cases in the US has shifted from the Northeast to the Southern and Western states.

The number of Covid cases may be similar to a flu season, depending on detection rates, but mortality is more severe.

TN theatre owner booked for murder

Tamil Nadu Police registered a murder case against theatre owner Natarajan in the temple town Palani after one of the two persons he shot at during a quarrel, succumbed to bullet injuries.

On Monday police had arrested Natarajan for shooting Palanisamy and Subramani, with his revolver.

While the doctors had removed the bullet from Palanisamy's right thigh and he was out of danger, Subramani did not respond to the treatment and died.

Bulandshahr rape accused held from Haryana

Kamruddin, the main accused in the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old law student, was arrested on Tuesday from Faridabad in Haryana, the police said.

The victim ended her life on Monday leaving behind a suicide note that said she was taking the drastic step in protest against police inaction.

Bulandshahr SSP Santosh Kumar Singh said that the suicide note had been sent for handwriting examination and added that the remaining accused would be arrested soon.

California hits 'emergency brake' to curb COVID-19 surge

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a series of "emergency brake" measures to contain the COVID-19 resurgence, which was "simply without precedent in the state's pandemic history".

According to a statement issued by Newsom's office on Monday, 41 of California's total 58 counties, which comprise over 94 per cent of the state's population, would be labelled as the 'purple tier' and measures against the pandemic corresponding to the level could be effective Tuesday, reports Xinhua news agency.

Last week, 13 counties were in the state's most restrictive tier.

Car goes up in flames, driver charred to death in UP

A driver, trapped in his car, was charred to death when the vehicle caught fire after crashing into a minibus on the Karnal-Meerut Highway in Shamli district.

The accident took place on Monday night.

Circle Officer Jitendra Kumar said that the incident took place when a crane carrying the mini bus collided with the car which caught fire. The doors of the car apparently got locked and the driver could not escape.

The deceased driver has not yet been identified, and his body has been sent for post-mortem.

Global Covid-19 cases top 54.8mn: Johns Hopkins

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 54.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1,325,750, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Tuesday morning, the total caseload and death toll stood at 54,826,773 and 1,325,752, respectively, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 11,197,791 and 247,142, respectively, according to the CSSE.

Chinese mainland reports 15 new imported COVID-19 cases

The Chinese mainland reported 15 new imported Covid-19 cases Monday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 3,716, the National Health Commission said on Tuesday.

Of the new imported cases, six were reported in Sichuan, four in Shanghai, three in Guangdong, and one each in Tianjin and Shandong, the commission said in its daily report.

Among all the imported cases, 3,382 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery while 334 remained hospitalized, the Xinhua news agency reported.

No deaths had been reported from the imported cases.
