Rains again disrupt traffic on highways connecting Hyderabad

Heavy rains and flash floods in and around Hyderabad have again affected the movement of traffic on various highways.

For the second time in less than a week, the highways connecting Hyderabad to Vijayawada, Bengaluru and Warangal were damaged, bringing vehicular traffic to a halt.

Even before the authorities could fully repair and restore the roads damaged due to the torrential rains and flash floods of October 13-14, a fresh spell of heavy rains battered the roads in the city and outskirts on Saturday night.

Major blast in Agra, 3 dead

A huge blast in a godown full of stockpiles of firecrackers killed three unidentified persons and injured half a dozen people in Agra.

The number of casualties could go up after the debris is cleared, police said. The whole area was enveloped in a cloud of smoke and stink. The explosion was heard even two kilometres away.

All three succumbed to injuries while being shifted to hospital.

India successfully test fires Brahmos missile form navy ship

India successfully test fires Brahmos supersonic cruise missile from Indian Navy's stealth destroyer on Sunday.

"Brahmos, the supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired today on 18th October 2020 from Indian Navy's indigenously-built stealth destroyer INS Chennai, hitting a target in the Arabian Sea," the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said in a statement.

The missile hit the target successfully with pin-point accuracy after performing high-level and extremely complex manoeuvres.

Brahmos as 'prime strike weapon' will ensure the warship's invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges, thus making the destroyer another lethal platform of Indian Navy.

CRPF officer injured in grenade attack in J&K

An assistant sub-inspector of central reserve police force (CRPF) was injured on Sunday in a grenade attack by militant in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.

Police said militants hurled the grenade at the CRPF posse in Tral town.

"An assistant sub-inspector of CRPF was injured in the grenade attack. He has been shifted to hospital for treatment. The area has been cordoned off for searches," police said.

Ballia firing accused pleads innocence, accuses officials of bias

Dhirendra Pratap Singh, who is absconding after allegedly shooting dead a villager in Ballia, has claimed that he did not open fire as said by his rivals and police and maintained that he fled after the firing as he feared for his life.

Even as he accused district civil and police officials of biased action against him, police announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on Dhirendra and was conducting raids to arrest him.

A close associate of Dhirendra moved a plea in a lower court on his behalf for his surrender on Saturday, after which police beefed up security around the district courts complex.

Superintendent of Police Ballia Devendra Nath said that a heavy police force was deployed in and around the district courts compound to foil the accused's surrender bid.

Purnea IGP dies of COVID in Patna

Bihar Police's Purnea Range Inspector General of Police Binod Kumar died of COVID-19 here early Sunday morning, official sources said.

The 59-year-old Bihar cadre IPS officer was admitted at Patna's All India Institute of Medical Sciences for the last four days after he was referred from a Purnea hospital as he was found coronavirus positive.

He was a patient of diabetes and his health deteriorated due to the virus infection.

5 injured in US shopping centre gas explosion

Five people were injured in a gas explosion at a shopping centre in the US state of Virginia, according to officials.

The incident took place on Saturday at the two-storey shopping centre, which is just a few blocks west of the James Madison University campus in Harrisonburg, reports Xinhua news agency.

Describing the incident as a "complete loss", Michael Parks, a spokesman for the city said at a news conference that a three-alarm fire spread to at least two other commercial buildings.

Gonda police have arrested seven persons after it was revealed that priest Samrat Das had orchestrated an attack on himself on October 10 as he wanted to frame one Amar Singh and grab his 120 bigha land, police said on Sunday.

The attack had attracted flak from the opposition on the Yogi Adityanath government.

The Gonda police arrested Munna Singh, Vipin, Neeraj Singh, Sonu Singh, Mahant Sitaram, Shiv Shankar Singh, and Vinay Kumar on Saturday from Haridwar Singh Bagh in Tiremanorama village under Ithiyathok police station jurisdiction.

German president in quarantine after bodyguard tests positive for COVID-19

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier entered quarantine after one of his bodyguards tested positive for COVID-19, according to a spokeswoman for the president's office.

Steinmeier's first test was negative. Further tests are planned in the coming days, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

Germany on Saturday recorded 7,830 new infections of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest daily spike since the pandemic began, according to the Robert Koch Institute, Germany's state disease control and prevention agency.
