10,488 structures destroyed in California wildfires

At least 10,488 structures have been destroyed due to the 21 wildfires still raging across California, with 12 of them still categorised as major incidents, according to authorities.

In its latest update, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said that more than 5,300 firefighters continued to battle the blazes as of Saturday.

On Friday, windy conditions were experienced across Northern California which challenged efforts in containing the 24 new initial attack wildfires that broke out across the state, it said.

Man held for firing outside Gurugram mall

A 24-year-old man was arrested on charge of opening fire at a mall on the Mehrauli-Gurugram Road here in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

A countrymade pistol, five cartridges and one spent cartridge were seized from Musaddiq Ansari after he fired in the parking lot of the Metropolitan Mall, the police said.

Ansari, a resident of Bijwasan in Delhi, runs a food supplement shop in Bijwasan and was a regular visitor to a club in the mall over the last 2-3 years.

Ansari visited the mall during the night. After he returned to the parking lot in a drunken state around 3am, he allegedly fired a shot into the air. However, no one was hurt in the incident.

"A passerby informed a police patrol vehicle stationed at the MG Road Metro station. The police rushed to the spot and arrested him," said DLF Phase-2 police station SHO Inspector Aman.

About 2,163 candidates are in the fray for 284 out of 568 seats in the country's House of Representatives, reports Xinhua news agency.

Mirzapur MP seeks ban on 'Mirzapur 2'

Anupriya Patel, the Apna Dal MP from Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district, has demanded a ban on the web series, "Mirzapur 2", saying it was spreading ethnic disharmony.

The MP has also alleged that the series, that was recently released on Amazon Prime, was maligning the image of Mirzapur by portraying it as a "violent" region.

She told reporters that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Mirzapur "is a 'centre of harmony' and the matter must be investigated and strict action taken against those responsible for sullying its image".

"Mirzapur 2" is a violent tale of feuds in families, politics and elections.

18 killed in Kabul education centre attack

At least 18 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a suicide bomb attack outside an education centre in the Afghan capital, Kabul, officials said.

The explosion at the private facility, which offers courses for students in higher education, occurred late on Saturday afternoon, the BBC reported citing the interior ministry.

The building in the predominantly Shia Muslim Dasht-e-Barchi area usually hosts hundreds of students.

Many have been taken to hospital. There are fears the death toll may rise.

Early voting has started all across the state of New York State, offering voters nine days to cast their ballots prior to the November 3 presidential election.

The period of New York's early voting, which began on Saturday morning, will run until November 1, Xinhua news agency quoted the schedule released by the state government as saying.

There will be no early voting on November 2, it added.

Yellow alert for 16 Karnataka districts as rains in store

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) on Saturday issued yellow alert for 16 districts, including Bengaluru

The KSNMDC also issued a thunderstorm warning in these districts, while warning of isolated heavy to very heavy rains likely over interior Karnataka, Malnad and the coastal regions.

For Bengaluru, the agency predicted that widespread light to moderate rains with isolated places and heavy rains, associated with thunder activity, likely over BBMP area for next two days till October 26.

9 arrested for raping minor girl forced into prostitution

In a sensational development, Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district police have arrested nine men four months after they allegedly raped a minor Nellore district girl forced into prostitution by her own relative.

Police arrested Syed Salman, 24, from Kondapi, Katragadda Siva Kumar, 24 and Unnam Naveen, 31, Chowtlapalem, Burramsetty Ravi Teja, 24, Singarayikonda and Gondi Vamsi Krishna, 24, Kondamurusupalem.

Others included Kasireddy Brahma Reddy, 25, Chintalapalem, Dhanyasi Deva Prakash, 24, Ulavapadu, Ravuri Aravind, 25, Ponnaluru and Komatla Yedukondalu, 30, Kothapatnam.

Global COVID-19 cases top 42.5 million, says Johns Hopkins

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 42.5 million, while the deaths have soared to more than 1,148,940, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Sunday morning, the total number of cases stood at 42,532,198, while the death toll surged to 1,148,943, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 8,571,943 and 224,771, respectively, according to the CSSE.
