Goa's COVID-19 count goes past 7k mark, death toll at 60

The number of COVID-19 cases in Goa increased by 259 on Tuesday to reach 7,075, while four deaths took the toll to 60, an official said.

A total of 238 people were discharged during the day, taking the number of such cases to 5,114, leaving the state with 1,901 active cases, he said.

"A 29-year-old man, a 79-year-old woman, a 54-year- old man and an 80-year-old man died. On Tuesday, a total of 2,866 samples were tested, of which 259 were positive, 2,037 negative and reports of 570 reports are awaited," he informed.

390 test positive, J&K Covid tally reaches 22,396

Three hundred ninety people tested positive in J&K on Tuesday as the total Covid-19 infections count rose to 22,396 in the union territory.

A statement issued by the information and public relations department said 390 people tested positive on Tuesday including 152 in the Jammu division and 238 in the Kashmir division.

Millions return to lockdown in Philippines

Millions of people in the Philippines returned to a COVID-19 lockdown on Tuesday, after doctors warned a surge in new coronavirus cases could push the country's healthcare system to collapse.

Stay-at-home orders are now in place in Manila and the four surrounding provinces of Laguna, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan on the island of Luzon until August 18, reports the BBC.

The new lockdown came after 80 medical associations on August 1 called on President Rodrigo Duterte to toughen restrictions in a bid to slow the spread of the virus.

Russia records lowest COVID-19 cases since April

Russia recorded 5,159 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours, the lowest daily figure since April 23, authorities said on Tuesday

The new cases took the overall caseload to 861,423, the fourth highest in the world, reports TASS News Agency.

According to the anti-coronavirus crisis center, the number was the lowest since April 23, when 4,774 cases were identified.

The daily growth rate is 0.6 per cent.

Pradeep Singh tops 2019 civil services exam

Pradeep Singh topped the 2019 Civil Services Exam, while Pratibha Verma, who stood third in the exam, was the topper among women candidates, according to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which announced the results on Tuesday.

According to UPSC, a total of 829 candidates have been selected for various civil services through the 2019 edition of the exam. UPSC said that out of the 829 candidates, 304 are from general category, 78 from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), 251 from Other Backward Classes (OBC), 129 from Schedule Castes and 67 from Schedule Tribe category. The EWS category was implemented in the exam for the first time in 2019.

Airlines seek permission from Nepal govt to resume flights

The Nepal governments decision to resume domestic and international flights from August 17 has prompted airline companies to start submitting their proposals seeking permission to resume operations, it was reported.

According to Raj Kumar Chhetri, spokesperson for Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), a total of 12 airline companies, including two from Nepal, have submitted proposals for slots, reports The Himalayan Times.

"Generally, airline companies have to resubmit their proposal for slots if flight operations are halted for more than 60 days," he said on Monday.

1 killed, holiday declared as rains pound Mumbai, MMR

At least one person was killed in Thane as heavy rain clobbered Mumbai since Monday night with the state government declaring a holiday in the city and Mumbai Metropolitan Region areas, officials said on Tuesday.

A 15-year-old boy Rakib A. Mandal was electrocuted and died on the spot when he came in contact with a live wire of a street-light pole near the Owala Hanuman Temple on Ghodbunder Road in Thane.

Mumbai city recorded 23 cms while the suburbs notched 16.cms of rain which threw normal life out of gear in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad (MMR areas), catching commuters unawares.

The Central Railway's Harbour Line was stopped from Kurla-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and trains crawled on the main lines, but the Western Railway suspended services between Bandra-Churchgate owing to flooding in Dadar and surrounding areas.

With 1,384 new cases, Odisha's Covid tally rises to 37,681

Odisha on Tuesday reported 1,384 new Covid-19 cases, taking the state's tally to 37,681, while nine people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, increasing the state's death toll to 216.

Out of the nine deaths, six persons died in Ganjam and one each death was reported from Puri, Jajpur and Khurdha districts.

Out of the fresh cases, 889 were reported from quarantine centres, the rest 595 were local contact cases.

Jabalpur woman's 28-year fast to end on Bhumi Pujan day

On August 5, when the 'Bhumi Pujan' for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya will take place, a 81-year-old Urmila Chaturvedi, a resident of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, will break fast after 28 years. When the disputed structure was demolished in Ayodhya in 1992, she had given up eating pledging that she would consume food only when the Ram temple construction will take place.

Spurt in new cases in Agra as more samples are tested

With the number of samples going up each day, there is a fresh spurt in cases of COVID-19 in the Taj city.

A month ago, the daily average had gone down to below 10 but in the last two weeks, the number has gone up above 25.

The spurt is not surprising at all, as the daily testing of samples has increased now, explained IMA secretary Dr Sanjay Chaturvedi.

So far 56,563 samples have been tested. In the past 24 hours, 32 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Agra. The number of containment zones is 89.

'Ramarcha' puja begins in Ayodhya ahead of 'bhumi pujan'

The 'Ramarcha' puja began in Ayodhya on Tuesday morning, a day ahead of the 'bhumi pujan' for the construction of the Ram temple.

The 'Ramarcha' puja which involves recitation of 'Ram Katha' and 'Ram Dhun' is being presided over by 11 priests from Varanasi and Ayodhya. The puja will continue for six to seven hours at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex.

Global COVID-19 cases top 18.1 million: Johns Hopkins

Pakistan resorts to unprovoked shelling on LoC

Pakistan resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation by using small arms and mortar shells on the Line of Control (LoC) on Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, a Defence Ministry spokesman said.

Colonel Devender Anand said that the ceasefire violation took place at about 7 a.m. in the Krishna Ghati sector.

"The Indian Army is retaliating befittingly," he added.

Over 2,720 ceasefire violations have been made by Pakistan this year so far in which 21 civilians were killed and 94 others injured.
