SIT searches Shahjahanpur woman’s hostel room for 6 hours in Chinmayanand case

Members of a special investigation team here on Tuesday searched the hostel room of the student who has accused BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand of raping and "physically exploiting" her for a year.

The SIT members, accompanied by forensic experts, spent nearly six hours at the hostel room to collect evidence in connection with her allegations against the former Union minister, college sources said.

The student and her family members accompanied the SIT members during the search, they said.

The team, which reached the hostel around noon, remained in the room till 5.45 pm, examining the postgraduate student's belongings.

After the search, the room was locked and sealed.

Pakistani man detained in border village in Rajasthan's Barmer

A Pakistani national has been detained from a village near the Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan's Barmer district, officials said on Tuesday.

Bhag Chand, resident of Boranada in Pakistan's Sangad district, sneaked into India by crossing the international border on Monday and was detained in Akli village, BSF DIG Gurupal Singh said.

He had Pakistani Rupees 30 in his possession and no suspicious object was found on him, Singh said.

The accused was handed over to the police on Tuesday. He will be interrogated by intelligence agencies. So far no case has been registered against Chand.

The Congress party on Tuesday accused the BJP, that is ruling in the Centre as well as in several states including Uttar Pradesh, of giving protection to rape accused politicians.

Party spokesperson Ragini Nayak said that from Nihal Chand to Chinmayanand there was a long list of such accused. She also recalled how the 16-year-old Unnao rape victim had to fight for justice and how her family was killed one after another during her prolonged fight against the accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

Gujarat reduces traffic fines hiked under new law

The BJP-ruled Gujarat has slashed the traffic fines that were hiked manifold after new central law came into force on Sep 1.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that as per new traffic rules there is a fine of ₹1,000 for not wearing a helmet, but in Gujarat it has been reduced to ₹500. New fine for not wearing seat belt is ₹1,000 as per the new rule, but in Gujarat it's ₹500.

Driving a vehicle dangerously attracts a fine of ₹5,000 as per new rules, however, in Gujarat it will be ₹1,500 for three-wheelers, ₹3,000 for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and ₹5000 for others.

Security official shoots self dead inside DRDO premises

A 51-year-old official posted with the Defence Security Corps, which provides security cover to Defence installations, allegedly shot himself dead inside the DRDO complex in Delhi on Tuesday, police said.

The security official was identified as Hardeep Singh, a native of Punjab, they said.

"Police received information about the incident at 9.58 am. A team rushed to the spot and shifted the victim to Trauma Centre where he was declared brought dead," a senior police officer said.

Singh shot himself on the neck with his service rifle. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

The Supreme Court has agreed to examine the plea of a "minor" Muslim girl, who has been ordered to stay in a shelter home for women in Uttar Pradesh, after her marriage was found to be void by the Allahabad High Court.

The apex court was hearing an appeal filed by the girl, who is 16-years-old as per a medical report, against the high court's July order which dismissed her petition against a trial court directive sending her to a shelter home at Ayodhya.
