Five killed as bus catches fire in Karnataka

At least five people, including three children, were charred to death and many others sustained burns when a Benglauru bound bus they were travelling in caught fire on a national highway in Chitradurga district on Wednesday morning.

According to police sources, there were 32 people in the vehicle.

"Five people have died after a bus caught fire on National Highway 4 at about 3.30 am. The bus was on the way from Vijayapura to Bengaluru," a police officer said.

Mumbai fishermen net a whale shark

Late on Tuesday night, a fishing trawler in the Arabian Sea accidentally netted a big catch around 40-50 kms off Colaba.

A giant dotted whale shark got entangled in the fishing nets and desperately struggled to set itself free, but failed, said one of the fishermen on board the vessel.

Owing to darkness and inclement weather conditions, the fishing trawler decided to sail back to Mumbai, dragging the creature in the nets behind it, and reached here early on Wednesday.

They left it along with the net near the shores of the 145-year-old Sassoon Docks in Colaba and sailed back into the sea, informed Damodar Tandel, President of Akhil Bharatiya Machhimar Kriti Samiti and prominent fisherfolk leader.

Delhi police ASI dies as under construction floor of house collapses

A Delhi police ASI succumbed to the injuries he sustained after the under construction third floor of a building in the Bara Hindu Rao area of North Delhi collapsed on Wednesday morning.

The 49-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Zakir Hussain was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead. A constable also suffered minor injuries in the accident.

The police said that the two policemen were on a tenant verification drive in the area in view of Independence Day on August 15 when the accident took place.

Top Hizbul commander Azad Lalhari killed in J&K encounter

Top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Azad Lalhari was killed on Wednesday in an encounter with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said.

"In the initial firing, two soldiers were injured. One of the injured succumbed to his injuries at the Army's Base Hospital in Srinagar," police said

Police said Lalhari was killed in the joint operation by police, Army and the CRPF in Kamrazipora village.

Reward announced for info on Hapur rape accused

The Hapur police have announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on Dalpat, the accused in the rape of a six-year-old girl.

The victim was kidnapped and brutally raped last Thursday and is presently admitted in the Meerut Medical College where her condition remains critical.

Three days after three sketches were released based on the statements of the girl's parents and neighbours, the police have now announced the bounty to quicken the pace of the investigation expecting leads to increase.

While none of the senior police officials were ready to comment on the delay in the arrest of the accused, a police spokesman released photographs of search operations that show the cops looking for the accused in the area where the child was raped after being kidnapped.

City police have arrested the person accused of posting a derogatory message which triggered riots in Bengaluru east last night, an official said on Wednesday.

Man dies in wall collapse following heavy rains in UP

A 60-year-old man died when a wall collapsed on him following heavy rains in U, Police said on Wednesday.

Jitendra Singh was injured in the incident in Bhabhua village on Tuesday night, they said.

Twitter testing automatic translation for tweets

witter has kicked off a test with a small group of users across iOS and Android in Brazil that automatically translates tweets that are in a language they may not be able to read.

"To make it easier to understand the conversations you follow on Twitter, we're experiencing an automatic translation for Tweets in other languages that appear on your homepage," the company said in a statement.

The translation is already a feature of Twitter, but it's not automatic. The platform currently supports inline translations, so users can click on any tweet written in a different language to translate it.

If the primary language of the user is set to English within Twitter, all other Tweets in different languages will have a Translate button.

3 dead in Bengaluru, 110 arrested for rioting over FB post

Three people have reportedly died and several others injured in the arson that resulted after an inflammatory social media post in parts of East Bengaluru. Over 100 rioters have been arrested, said the police on Wednesday.

Around 60 police personnel have sustained injuries in the violent incidents of stone pelting and attacks by rioters that erupted on Tuesday evening. Police had to resort to firing in order to bring the situation under control.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the city while curfew was clamped in the DJ Halli and KG Halli police station limits. On Tuesday, the two police stations were targets of the violence.

Lucknow records highest spike of 831 COVID cases in a day

Lucknow has recorded an all-time high of 831 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours, as it crossed the 14,000 mark. Medical experts have said that if immediate steps are not taken the state capital may soon cross the 1,000-mark in a day.

Tuesday's figure took the caseload to 14,221 since the outbreak on March 11, of which 42 per cent (6,043 cases) have been reported till date in August.

About 7,317 patients have also recovered till date, but since the transmission rate is higher than recovery, active patients have swelled to 6,743. Though asymptomatic cases are allowed home isolation, the increase in active cases added to the pressure on COVID hospitals.

Prof TN Dhole, senior virologist and ex-professor at SGPGI, said moisture in the atmosphere in monsoon is abetting the spread of the virus.

An unidentified militant and a soldier were killed, while another jawan was injured in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Wednesday, officials said.

Security forces launched a search operation in an orchard in Kamrazipora village of Pulwama in the early hours of the day on receiving information about the presence of militants there, they said.

The officials said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire, injuring two soldiers.

The injured security personnel were rushed to an Army hospital, where one of them succumbed, they said.

One militant was also killed in the gunfight, the officials said, adding that an AK rifle and a few grenades were recovered from the encounter site.

The identity and affiliation of the slain militant are being ascertained, they added.
