NHRC team to visit Jamia on Jan 14 to meet students injured in police action

A National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team will visit the Jamia Millia Islamia University on January 14 to meet the students and staff members who got injure din the December 15 police action.

A posse of Delhi police personnel had barged into the JMI campus on December 15 evening without due permission from the varsity administration, indiscriminately fired teargas shells, ransacked the library and brutally beat up students and staff members.

A protest near Jamia against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) had earlier turned violent and the protesters clashed with the police. The police initially alleged that Jamia students were part of the mob, though an inquiry later revealed no Jamia student was involved in the violence or arson.

Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar said that the NHRC team will take statements of the injured students and the witnesses of the incident.

"I hope they will try to see through our point of view," she said.

A few artistes from the Asmita theatre group on Sunday raised slogans against the CAA and NRC at Pragati Maidan. They were detained by the police and released after ovr two hours.

The Delhi Police said: "Information was received around 1600 hrs that some persons were raising anti-NRC slogans at Pragati Maidan. Five persons associated with Asmita Theatre Group were detained and later released at 1820 hours."

2 men killed as car falls into gorge in Uttarakhand's Tehri

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the voices of those protesting against the contentious citizenship law, NRC and National Population Register (NPR) cannot be muzzled, as he hailed the protests in West Bengal during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit.

Activists, who hit the streets on Saturday with placards that read 'Modi Go Back' and 'Down with BJP', continued their sit-in all night at Esplanade area of Kolkata, insisting that their agitation would continue till the prime minister left the city.

"The voices of those resisting the discriminatory CAA-NRC-NPR cannot be muzzled," Yechury tweeted.

Encounter breaks out between militants, security forces in J-K's Pulwama

An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police said.
