Kerala CM, ministers to self-isolate after Collector tests positive
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday announced that he and seven of his cabinet colleagues have decided to go into self-isolation after Malappuram Collector K. Gopalakrishnan tested COVID positive.
However, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who had accompanied Vijayan to Kozhikode to visit the survivors of the Air India Express flight from Dubai, which skidded off the runway and fell into a gorge on Friday evening leaving 18 dead, and inspect the accident site, will not isolate himself.
Gopalakrishnan had been coordinating the rescue and relief operations at the accident site.

New Zealand extends COVID-19 restrictions for 12 days
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Friday announced a 12-day extension of the country's Covid-19 restrictions, after a cluster of cases in Auckland city increased to 29 amid the second and stronger wave of the pandemic.
Addressing the media here, Ardern said the decision to extend the restrictions was "in keeping with our cautionary approach and New Zealand's philosophy of going hard and going early", the BBC reported.
She said that, in 12 days' time, she thought "the cluster will be identified, will be isolated, and we can move to Level 2 in Auckland with confidence".
All 29 cases "remain linked to one cluster centred in Auckland", Ardern said, adding that 38 people are in government quarantine.

1,921 new cases in Telangana, corona tally crosses 88K-mark
Telangana's coronavirus cases' tally crossed the 88,000-mark on Friday as 1,921 new cases were detected across the state during the last 24 hours, officials said.
Nine more fatalities pushed the state's death toll to 674.
Of the total 88,396 cases in Telangana now, active cases total 23,438, including 16,439 in home or institutional isolation. More than 84 per cent of those in home isolation are asymptomatic.
The fatality rate in the state stands at 0.76 per cent as against the national average of 1.96 per cent. Officials said 53.87 per cent of the deceased COVID-19 patients had comorbidities.

Late Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma's name is mentioned in the list of recipients as 6th BAR to Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously.
Sharma, posted in the Special Cell, was killed during the 2008 Batla House encounter here. The highly decorated police officer was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peace-time military decoration, on January 26, 2009.

4 of T'gana family found dead under suspicious circumstances
Four members of a family were found dead under suspicious circumstances in Telangana's Wanaparthy district on Friday, police said.
The bodies of a woman, her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter were found lying in different parts of their house in Nagpur village of Revalli mandal.
The deceased were identified as Ajmeera Bee (63), her daughter Asma Begum (35), daughter-in-law Khawaja Pasha (42) and granddaughter Haseena (10).
As nobody had come out of the house in the morning, the neighbours went in only to find all family members lying dead. They immediately alerted the police, which shifted the bodies for autopsy and took up the investigations.
UP MLA booked in property grab case held in MP
Vijay Mishra, the MLA from Gyanpur in Bhadohi district who was booked on charges of grabbing property and intimidation, was arrested on Friday from Agar in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, an official said.
Bhadohi Superintendent of Police Ram Badan Singh told reporters that Mishra was arrested on a tip-off provided by Bhadohi police to their counterparts in Madhya Pradesh.
The SP said that a police team had been sent to Madhya Pradesh to bring the MLA to Bhadohi on a transit remand.
On August 9, police had said that Vijay Mishra, elected to the Assembly in 2017 on the Nishad Party ticket, his wife Ramlali Mishra, and their son Vishnu Mishra were booked on his relative's complaint.

Police has arrested 60 more persons in connection with the Bengaluru riots, taking the total arrests to 206, including a woman corporator's husband, an official said on Friday.
"We have arrested 60 more persons for their role in the recent Bengaluru riots," Central Crime Branch (CCB) Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Kuldeep Jain told IANS.
Kaleem Pasha, one of the arrested persons, is the husband of Irshaad Begum, a corporator of Nagawara ward.
Of those arrested, 80 have been shifted to Ballari jail.
Wildfire near LA threatens 5,000 structures
An aggressive wildfire near Los Angeles that has already burnt 10,500 acres with zero per cent containment, was threatening more than 5,000 structures, authorities said.
As of Thursday, the fire has already three structures, reports Xinhua news agency.
The blaze, dubbed the Lake Fire, was first reported on Wednesday afternoon in the Angeles National Forest located north of Los Angeles downtown, and spread to over 10,000 acres within three hours.
Several structures are threatened by the fire which is growing "with a very rapid rate of speed" and mandatory evacuations are in place, according to the InciWeb, an interstate incident information system.
Man arrested with drug worth ₹ 5 lakh
A 26-year-old man from Latur in central Maharashtra was arrested for allegedly transporting 20 kg of marijuana worth ₹ 5 lakh to Pune, police said on Friday.
According to the police, the man, identified as Allabaksh Shaikh, had obtained an e-pass from authorities citing "death" of a family member to travel to Pune.
"We received a tip-off that the person is travelling in a car to Pune from Latur with marijuana which he wanted to sell in the city.
"Accordingly, on Wednesday teams were sent in the Chinchwad area and the person was nabbed near Dange Chowk and 20kg of marijuana worth ₹5 lakh was seized from his car," said an official from the Pimpri-Chinchwad police station.

Two dead as boulders falls on vehicles in Mandi
Two people were killed as boulders fell on their vehicles in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district in the early hours of Friday, police said.
The incident occurred near Hanogi Mata Temple on the Chandigarh-Manali national highway at 5:15 am, Mandi Superintendent of Police, Gurdev Chand, said.
A big boulder fell on a parked vehicle, leaving the driver dead. Efforts are on to extricate the body from the mangled remains of the vehicle.
Some boulders also fell on another vehicle passing through the area, killing driver Gurmukh Singh of Una's Bangana tehsil.
Family vandalises Agra hospital after patient dies
Family members of a patient, who died during the treatment, vandalised a private hospital in Agra and thrashed the staff alleging carelessness by the doctors and overcharging.
The hospital is owned by former Samajwadi Party MLA Rajendra Singh
Rajendra Singh, the owner of GR Hospital, said that the patient, Nahar Singh (50), was admitted in a critical condition on July 19. He was shifted from SN Medical College. The patient was kept at the Intensive Care Unit on a high oxygen flow for over three weeks as he was suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome.
The patient was on ventilator since last three days. The family members of the patients were frequently updated about his unstable health. On Thursday, Nahar Singh died during treatment.

Two suicides reported in Muzafarrnagar, UP
A woman allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling of her residence in Muzaffarngar district following a family dispute, a police official said Friday.
Anju, 48, was found hanging by a sari at her home in Charthawal town Thursday evening.
She left a suicide note in which she said no one should be held responsible for her death, but her family has alleged she was killed, the official said, adding an investigation was underway.
Chinese mainland reports 30 new Covid-19 cases
The Chinese mainland has reported 30 new coronavirus cases, health authorities said on Friday.
According to the National Health Commission, the new cases comprise 22 imported and eight locally transmitted, reports Xinhua news agency.
All the locally-transmitted cases were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Of the imported cases, 16 were reported in Shanghai, five in Shaanxi and one in Sichuan, the commission said.
Two new suspected Covid-19 cases, which were imported from outside the mainland, were reported in Shanghai, and no deaths related to the disease were reported on Thursday, the commission said.

Heavy rains lead to waterlogging in many areas in Gurugram
Overnight rains led to waterlogging in several parts of Gurugram on Thursday, throwing normal life out of gear.
Traffic snarls were also reported from various parts of the city in the morning hours.
According to an official of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), the downpour has inundated at least 29 low-lying areas of the city.
"Waterlogging was reported from Sector 14, Atul Kataria Chowk, DLF phase 1, Sector 34, Sector 27 and other areas," he said.
Global COVID-19 cases top 20.7mn: Johns Hopkins
The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 20.7 million, while the deaths have increased to over 752,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
As of Friday morning, the total number of cases stood at 20,764,220 and the fatalities rose to 752,893, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
The US accounted for the world's highest number of infections and fatalities at 5,248,172 and 167,092, respectively, according to the CSSE.
Brazil came in the second place with 3,164,785 infections and 104,201 deaths.
Security beefed up in Delhi-NCR ahead of I-Day
Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, security has been beefed up in Delhi-NCR with multi-layered arrangements and strict vigil at the border areas. Apart from this, agencies like NSG, SPG and ITBP have been put on high alert.
"All the agencies will work in close coordination with each other to cater to all kinds of threat inputs. SWAT teams and Parakram vans have been strategically stationed," said a senior police officer.
Policemen in civil dress would be deployed at strategic locations across the capital with extra focus on in and around the Red Fort.
"We have also set up facial recognition systems at vantage points for suspect identification. This would help the security forces screen the suspects around the celebration area," the officer said.
