Constable dead as vehicle falls into Shimla gorge
A police constable died on Tuesday after the vehicle he was travelling in fell into a gorge while it was put in reverse in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district, the police said.
The deceased constable has been identified as Durga Dass, Superintendent of Police Omapati Jamwal said.
Twin girls die of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in Bihar
Twin sisters, aged four, died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district within hours of each other, a senior doctor said on Tuesday.
The girls, daughters of a labourer from Musahari block of the district, succumbed to the disease at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) on Monday, its Superintendent S K Shahi said.
They were admitted to the government hospital on April 24, he said.
The Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital had reported 120 deaths due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) or brain fever' last year.
Maha: Inmate attempts suicide in Nagpur jail
A 40-year-old jailed drug kingpin allegedly attempted suicide by hanging himself in his cell at the Central Jail in Maharashtra's Nagpur city, an official said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Monday evening when Firoz alias Aabu Khan tried to hang himself from the ceiling fan of his cell using a bedsheet, jail superintendent Anil Kumre said.
Khan had been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in January 2019 for allegedly running a drug network, he said.
An offence under section 309 (attempted suicide of Indian Penal Code has now been registered against the accused, the official added.
Maharashtra: Police bust gamblers in hi-tech raid
A drone came handy for the police in busting gamblers who had ensconced themselves in a secluded spot near here in Maharashtra notwithstanding the coronavirus-enforced lockdown, an official said on Tuesday.
After receiving a tip-off on Saturday evening about a group of 25 men indulged in gambling near Kolapa village, a team of police personnel conducted surveillance of the area through a drone and took their positions, the official said.

Justice Dipankar Datta took oath as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High court on Tuesday.
Maharashtra GovernorBhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office to him at Raj Bhavan, an official release said.
In view of the coronavirus pandemic, a limited number of guests including Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray anda few judges of the high court attended the ceremony, it said.

Irrfan Khan hospitalised after actor's health deteriorates
Actor Irrfan Khan is once again hospitalised. Amid the ongoing nationwide lockdown, the actor reportedly has been admitted in Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital.
The actor's health suddenly deteriorated as a result of which he needed immediate medical attention. The 53-year-old actor has been admitted to the hospital's ICU, according to a report in aajtak.in. His wife Sutapa Sikdar and two sons are with him.
The actor has been ailing ever since he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour a while back, and has been under medical attention for the same.
Irrfan is currently mourning the loss of his mother. The actor's mother Saeeda Begum breathed her last on Saturday in Jaipur where she used to stay. However, owing to the ongoing lockdown, the actor could not physically attend his mother's last rites and reportedly paid his last respect through video conferencing.
The actor's latest film is Homi Adajania's comedy "Angrezi Medium", the last-released Bollywood film before COVID-19 forced complete shutdown of cinema halls. "Angrezi Medium" ran in theatres for just a day before halls all over India were shut down. The film has eventually released in the OTT space.
"Angrezi Medium" marked Irrfan's return despite his ailing condition.

Two children drown in water pit in UP's Badaun
Two children drowned in a water pit near a brick kiln in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district, police said on Tuesday.
Rajkumar (8) and Sonu (6) were taking a bath in the pit when the incident took place in Ughati area on Monday, said SHO Pramod Kumar.
On receiving information, the police rushed to the spot and managed to take out the two children but they had died, the station house officer said.
Their parents are brick kiln labourers, Kumar added.

The Delhi High Court has sought Centre's stand over a plea seeking court's direction restraining the police officials from picking or arresting the Delhi riots-2020 victims/persons protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act on the pretext of investigation and sending them to jail in riots related cases during lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic.
While issuing notice on the plea filed by Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind, the court said, "all the individuals named in the petition, who are stated to have been arrested thus far, are at liberty to institute appropriate proceedings, in accordance with law, including seeking regular bail, before the Courts of competent jurisdiction, in the meantime.
Fire at adhesive factory in Greater Noida; none hurt
A fire ripped through a factory that manufactures adhesives in Greater Noida on Tuesday, officials said.

Pakistan violates LoC ceasefire in Poonch
Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling on the Line of Control (LoC) on Tuesday in J&K's Poonch district, Defence Ministry spokesperson said.
Colonel Devender Anand said, "At about 11 a.m. today Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and shelling with mortars along the LoC in Shahpur, Kirni and Qasba sectors of Poonch district. Indian army is retaliating befittingly."
Pakistan also violated bilateral ceasefire in Poonch district on Monday by shelling in Mankato sector.
