Eight shops in a gram panchayat market and a police outpost were gutted in a fire that broke out early morning on Saturday in Shivaji Maharaj Chowk area of Amravati district in Maharashtra, officials said.
It was put out some time later and the damage to property is estimated to be Rs 15 lakh, an official said.
There were no injuries as the shops were closed due to the lockdown in place for the coronavirus outbreak, he added.
1 killed in explosion at sugar mill in Muzaffarnagar
At least one labourer was killed and another injured in an explosion at a sugar mill here on Saturday, an official said.
It is suspected that the chimney of a boiler in Bajaj Sugar mill in Budhana exploded, he said.
The deceased has been identified as Aslukman (40) and the injured labourer, Satyavan, was rushed to a hospital, the official said.
Police reached the spot and an investigation is underway, he added.
Maharashtra: Headmaster arrested for raping his daughters
A middle-aged man has been arrested from Beed district in Maharashtra for allegedly raping his two daughters and attempting to sexually assault another, police said on Saturday.
Police also arrested four others, including family members of the accused, for allegedly not reporting the matter, an official said.
The accused is working as a headmaster of a school in Kej, he said.
He has been allegedly raping his daughters since the last eight years, police inspector Pradeep Tribhuvan said.

Jharkhand man commits suicide after wife refuses money for liquor
A 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after being denied Rs 300 for liquor in Jharkhand's Gumla district on Saturday, police said.
According to police, Ajay Oraon, a resident of Bada Loro village demanded Rs 300 from his wife, which she had borrowed from her mother for domestic expenditure during the lockdown.
When Ajay asked for the money for liquor, his wife refused saying that it was for household expenses.
Angry over the refusal, Ajay left the house. Later his body was found hanging from a tree, police said.

Spurt in forest fires in Manipur
The Manipur government has expressed concern over the sudden spurt in forest fires in the state and said adequate measures were being taken to bring the situation under control.
Over the past few days, forest fires have been reported from Langol and Phayeng in Imphal West, and Suangdoh in the hill district of Churachandpur, officials said.
Principal Chief Conservator K Angami, in a statement, said "forest fire incidences near the Imphal valley seem to be on the rise this year".
"The forests are sometimes deliberately set on fire by individuals to clear land, which then they can use for poppy plantation, or sometimes simply as a retaliatory measure against the forest department's strict restrictions on encroachment," he said, adding that firefighters have been pressed into service to tackle the blaze.
3 kids die of suffocation when dry dung caught fire
There children, aged seven-11, of a Dalit brick-kiln labourer died due to suffocation when dry cow dung caught fire in their house in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district on Saturday morning, police said.
The incident occurred at Bhora Kalan area. Sapna (11), Abhay (9) and Nikhil (7) were sleeping when their parents had gone to work in a brick kiln, an officer said.
They died due to suffocation when the dry cow dung nearby caught fire, the officer added.

Low-intensity earthquake hits J&K
A low-intensity earthquake, measuring 4.0, hit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, a Meteorological Department official said.
The tremors were felt at 6.14 am and lasted for a few seconds, the official said.
He said the epicentre of the quake was 60 kilometer below the surface of the earth at latitude 35.5 degrees north and longitude 74.8 degrees east.

Five killed, one hurt in highway accident in Gujarat
Five persons, including three members of a family, were killed and one injured, when a car rammed into a truck on Limbdi-Ahmedabad Highway in Gujarat's Surendranagar district, police said Saturday.
The incident took place near Kanpara village on Friday night, when a car travelling towards Gandhinagar rammed into a truck, an official from Limbdi police said.
While four persons died on the spot, another succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, he said, adding that an injured victim was undergoing treatment.
The deceased include three members of a family from Jamkhambhaliya and drivers of both the vehicles, the official said.
Two militants killed in encounter in J&K
Two militants were reportedly killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.
The security forces launched a cordon and search operation based on intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in Hardmand Guri village in Kulgam, a police spokesperson said.
"This operation based on a credible police input was launched this morning. Two terrorists have been reportedly killed so far," the spokesperson said, adding that the exchange of fire was going on.
Earlier, the police tweeted on its official handle that three militants had been trapped in the cordon. "Same group of #terrorists trapped who killed 3 civilians recently," the police said.
