BSP state general secy, 16 others join Congress in Jammu

BSP state general secretary AS Mottan and 16 others, including retired officers, sarpanches and social activists, joined the Congress on Tuesday in the presence of Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief and former tourism minister Gulam Ahmed Mir.

Mottan was accompanied by his supporters, who joined the Congress too at an event at the party's headquarters in Shahidi Chowk.

Mir admitted them into the Congress fold and expressed hopes that the party will be benefitted as a result of the new joining.

Mottan has contested the assembly elections twice on BSP tickets from the R S Pura assembly constituency. He is also the president of the J&K Batwal Sudhar Sabha.

The mega scheme of providing ₹72,000 each annually to five crore families belonging to the poorest category by Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be played up the party's Delhi unit through "aay pe charcha (discussion on income) meetings in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Delhi Congress president Sheila Dikshit termed the announcement as an "extraordinary step" and said she was getting congratulatory phone calls from people who are appreciating the sop "hugely".

"This is an extraordinary step which will benefit the people below the poverty line in the country. It is the first time that such a step has been taken in the world," she told reporters.

LS polls: Samajwadi Party names three candidates

Samajwadi Party on Tuesday declared list of its three candidates including Anand Sen from Faizabad Lok Sabha seat.

The party has announced Anand Sen from Faizabad, Hemraj Verma from Pilibhit and Devendra Yadav from Etah as its candidates, a party spokesman said.

The party had earlier declared list of 20 candidates including one from Madhya Pradesh.

SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav is contesting from Mainpuri, party president Akhilesh Yadav from Azamgarh, Dimple Yadav from Kannauj, Dharmendra Yadav from Badaun, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad, Mohd Azam Khan from Rampur.

Senior CPI(M) leader Janardan Pati on Tuesday claimed that the BJD would have to form an alliance with the BJP after elections, as the ruling party was unlikely to win adequate number of seats to return to power in Odisha.

Nirupam says will continue to take on BJP-Shiv Sena alliance

A day after being removed as president of the Mumbai Congress, party leader Sanjay Nirupam on Tuesday said he will continue to take on the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra and highlight its "failures".

The Congress on Monday appointed former Union minister Milind Deora as Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) chief, replacing Nirupam, who has been fielded by the party from the Mumbai North West parliamentary constituency.

Addressing a press conference, Nirupam said being a resident of the constituency for over 25-30 years, he always wanted to represent its people in the Lok Sabha.

The former MP expressed confidence about his victory from Mumbai North West, which will vote on April 29. The seat is currently represented Shiv Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar.

Battle lines drawn in Uttarakhand 5 Lok Sabha seats

The battle lines for the Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand have been drawn with the filing of nominations coming to an end on Monday.

While 65 candidates are in the race for five Lok Sabha seats in the state, which will go to polls in the first phase on April 11, the main contest is between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the prestigious Nainital seat, Congress General Secretary Harish Rawat is facing state BJP Chief Ajay Bhatt. Both suffered defeats in the 2017 Assembly elections.

The Congress has reposed faith in Rawat for the seat despite resistance from a section of state leaders who wanted him to take on former BJP Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in Haridwar.

Kanimozhi has assets over ₹30 crore

DMK candidate Kanimozhi, contesting from the Tuticorin Lok Sabha constituency in the April 18 elections, has assets of over ₹30 crore. Kanimozhi is a Rajya Sabha member since 2007 and is testing her fortunes to the Lower House for the first time.

She has been fielded from the southern constituency, where anti-Sterlite Industries protests on May 22 and 23 turned violent and 13 protesters were killed in police firing. Kanimozhi, daughter of late DMK chief M Karunanidhi, declared in her poll affidavit that the value of her movable assets stood at ₹21.16 crore.

She had two four-wheelers, including a BMW X5, valued at around ₹84.11 lakh. The gross market value of her immovable assets was ₹8.92 crore. Her liabilities stood at ₹1.92 crore.

According to the affidavit, of the six cases against her, she had been acquitted in the 2G Spectrum allocation case in 2017. Her income, based on the IT returns for 2017-18, was ₹1,40,29,910, up from ₹1,24,11,320 in FY 2013-14.

Six in fray for lone Mizoram LS seat after scrutiny

The nomination of all the six candidates for Mizoram's lone Lok Sabha seat and of three contestants for the by-election to Aizawl West -1 assembly seat were found to be in order after scrutiny on Tuesday, the Joint Chief Electoral Office H Lianzela said.

Following the scrutiny candidate of the ruling Mizo National Front C Lalrosanga, BJP's Nirupam Chakma, independent candidate sponsored by opposition Zoram People's Movement-Congress Lalnghinglova Hmar, Peoples Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram's (PRISM) T B C Lalvenchhunga are in the fray for the Lok Sabha seat.

The nomination papers of two other independents - Lalhriatrenga Chhangte and Lalthlamuani were also accepted, Lianzela said.

Sacked Rajasthan IPS officer says he will contest LS polls from Barmer

Former IPS officer Pankaj Kumar Chaudhary, who was dismissed recently by the Rajasthan government, said on Tuesday that he would contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Barmer parliamentary constituency.

"I have analysed seven seats in the western Rajasthan and have decided to contest from the Barmer parliamentary constituency. I have been the Superintendent of Police in Jaisalmer and understand the dynamics well," Chaudhary told reporters in Barmer.

The former IPS officer said he will file nomination on April 8. He said issues like women's safety and employment opportunities for the youth would be his priorities.

Imran Khan says Indo-Pak relations to remain tense till elections in India

Gadkari declares assets worth ₹25.12 crore in poll affidavit

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has declared movable and immovable assets worth ₹25.12 crore in an affidavit filed along with his nomination papers for the Nagpur parliamentary constituency. Gadkari filed his papers for the Nagpur Lok Sabha seat on Monday. Polling in the constituency will be held on April 11.

As per his tax return forms, his total income stood at ₹2,66,390 in 2013-14 and ₹6,40,700 in 2017-18. According to his affidavit, he has movable assets worth ₹69,38,691, while his wife has movable assets worth ₹91,99,160. A sum of ₹66,07,924 is in the name of the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF).

Similarly, Gadkari has immovable assets worth ₹6,95,98,325, his wife ₹6,48,60,325. A sum of ₹9,40,31,224 was in the name of HUF. Gadkari declared over 29 acres of agricultural land in Dhapewada in Nagpur, of which 15 acres are registered in the name of his wife and 14.60 acres owned by HUF. Gadkari declared an ancestral house at Mahal (Nagpur) and a flat at an MLA Society in Worli (Mumbai).

The Union minister, in his affidavit, has informed that he has invested ₹3,55,510 in savings scheme, mutual funds, bonds and shares. He has ₹8,99,111 in his banks account, according to the affidavit. Similarly, his wife's bank balance stood at ₹11,07,909. The senior BJP leader also has liabilities of ₹1,57,21,753 by way of bank loans. Gadkari declared six cars in his affidavit, four of which are in the name of his wife.

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) on Tuesday decided to contest Aurangabad Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra in alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi led by Prakash Ambedkar.

MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has picked Imtiaz Jaleel, a member of Maharashtra Assembly, as the party candidate.

BJP fields Rupak Sarmah from Nowgong LS seat

The BJP has fielded MLA Rupak Sarmah to contest the coming general elections from the Nowgong Lok Sabha seat, despite Rajen Gohain, the sitting MP from the constituency, getting a clean chit against a rape case against him.

The decision was confirmed on Monday night by the Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary board. Sarmah is a sitting BJP MLA from the Nowgong Sadar Assembly constituency.

Gohain has been winning from the Nowgong seat since 1999.

Goa poll officials ban campaign near churches on Good Friday

Political parties will not be allowed to campaign in the vicinity of churches on Good Friday, which falls on April 19, the state's Chief Electoral Officer Kunal has instructed.

The Christian holy day comes just days ahead of April 23, when the state will have polls for two Lok Sabha seats and bypolls for three Assembly constituencies.

As per the minutes of the meeting, parties expressed fear that campaigning near churches of the occasion of Good Friday could cause law and order problems and also hurt the sentiments of Christians.

Election Commission officials expressed confidence that all arrangements, including police deployment, had been made to ensure law and order was maintained for polls in the coastal state.

BJP names 'young turk' Tejaswi Surya for Bangalore South

The BJP on Tuesday named its Karnataka Yuva Morcha General Secretary Tejaswi Surya as candidate for the prestigious Banagalore South Lok Sabha constituency, which goes to poll on April 18.

The party's central election committee has decided to field the 28-year-old practicing lawyer in the Karnataka High Court, said a party official.

Touted to be a fiery orator, Surya is considered to be a protege of the party's right wing parent organisation -- the Rashtriya Swayamsevak (RSS).
