She made headlines a few times over the last two years for her outings as a lyricist. Her songs 'Mujhko Teri Yaari' with composer-singer Harshit Saxena and 'Maa Mujhe Apni Jaan Kehti Hai' with celebrated musician Sukhwinder Singh garnered rave reviews and love from music aficionados.

Now, poet-journalist Soumya Vajpayee is in the news for something equally auspicious. The celebrated news personality has won the ‘Aaj Ka Karmveer Award 2021’ in the media category for her contribution in the field of journalism.

“I grew up seeing my dad being an honest journalist and I always wanted to be that kind of a professional. I feel real stories come when you have empathy towards the people you interact with and maintain cordial relations with your sources, which go beyond a story. I strongly believe in earning relations alongside bylines and that’s been my mantra so far. I’m grateful that the jury of ‘Aaj Ka Karmveer Award 2021’ found me deserving of this title. This award motivates me to continue on my path with more enthusiasm,” says Soumya, who also teaches journalism to post graduate students in reputed Mumbai colleges.

The 31-year-old is currently working with one of India’s leading news organisations as the Editor – Lifestyle & City. Sharing what being a journalist means to her, Soumya says, “Being a journalist is a matter of pride for me. It’s something I always wanted to be and I’m proud that I’ve delivered so many stories without compromising on the ethics of journalism and this award is a testimony of my honesty.”
