A letter petition has been moved before the Allahabad High Court seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of Mahant Narendra Giri.

Mahant Narendra Giri, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP), was found hanging in his room at Baghambari Math in Prayagraj on Monday.

The letter sent by one Sunil Kumar to the High Court alleged that the death of Mahant Giri was suspicious and must be probed by an independent agency, Bar & Bench has reported.

Besides, the letter also sought directions to suspend the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and District Magistrate (DM) of Prayagraj.

It was contended that law and order in Prayagraj might be in danger as Mahant Giri was revered by Hindus and had million of followers.

"The entire country was shocked and law and order of Prayagraj is in great danger due to this mishappening," the letter said.

It was prayed that a suo motu public interest litigation petition should be registered based on the letter and cognizance against the respondent State authorities in the matter.
