The Congress on Thursday came down heavily on the BJP government over the arrest of P Chidambaram, accusing it of using the CBI and the ED as "personal revenge-seeking departments.”

Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister Chidambaram was arrested last night amid high drama by the CBI and he spent the night at a agency guest house.

"Over the last two days India witnessed the broad daylight murder of democracy as also the rule of law," said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.

He further said that while many accused in the INX Media case have not been arrested, a senior politician has been arrested without any legal basis.

"A seasoned politician was arrested on the statement of a woman charged with murder of her own daughter", says Surjewala referring to Indrani Mukherjea He further alleged that "false charges" were being heaped on senior political rivals to "silence" everyone in country.

The vindictive, malicious and selective manner in which former FM and HM P Chidambaram has been persecuted and prosecuted is nothing short of brazen personal and political vendetta by Modi govt, said Surjewala.

“With narrative on sinking economy spiralling out of their control, unprecedented job losses, shocking devaluation of rupee & unfathomable crisis in all sectors, we now see the depths to which a desperate Modi Govt 2.0 will stoop to divert the nation’s attention.”

“While the BJP Propaganda Machine in cahoots with puppet news channels, works desperately to churn out falsehoods, fake news and outright lies, the facts simply do not support their claim,” said Congress leader.

“Matter pertains to 2007 & arrest of P Chidambaram has been made after a dozen years, 6 years after PM Modi came to power. Neither have those been arrested who have been given so called FIPB permission, nor officials of company that committed the crime.”
