Chahar hands India series win over Bangladesh

Former CEC T.N. Seshan passes away

Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India T.N. Seshan passed away in Chennai late Sunday evening. He is reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

Seshan is credited with ushering an era of unprecedented electoral reforms which paved the way for strengthening the Election Commission of India as an institution and streamlining the process of free and fair elections in India.

Maharashtra Governor asks Shiv Sena to indicate willingness to form govt

After the BJP, the party with the most seats in Maharashtra Assembly, conveyed its unwillingness to form the government in the state, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Sunday asked Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde to indicate willingness and ability to form the government.

With 56 seats, Shiv Sena is the second largest party in 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

We cannot form govt in state, BJP tells Maharashtra Guv

The BJP on Sunday met Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and informed him that it cannot form the government in the state. The development came after the Governor asked the BJP to show its intent to form the government.

BJP has 105 MLAs in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. It needs 40 more MLAs to form the government.

Delhi has won battle against dengue: Kejriwal

Less than 1100 cases of dengue and no deaths due to the mosquito-borne disease have been reported so far this year in the city, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday.

In a video message posted on Twitter, he said this was an achievement in comparison to 2015 when over 15,000 dengue cases had been recorded and 60 people had died in the national capital.

Kejriwal lauded residents' efforts in following the '10-hafte, 10-baje, 10-minute' campaign launched by him on September 1.

Cyclone 'Bulbul' disrupts normal life in Bengal; 4 killed

Cyclone 'Bulbul', which made landfall between Bengal and Bangladesh coasts, brought in its wake heavy rain coupled with strong winds till early Sunday, affecting normal life in several parts of the city and the coastal districts of the state.

At least four people were killed in rain-related incidents in Kolkata and North 24 Parganas since Saturday, according to official reports.

An employee of a renowned club in the city was killed when a branch of a cedar tree fell on him, police said.

In Basirhat, North 24 Parganas, three persons died in separate incidents.

According to a senior police officer, Suchitra Mandal (70) died at Purba Makala village in the district when a tree fell on her.

Hundreds of thousands evacuated as cyclone hits Bangladesh

A strong cyclone made landfall early Sunday in Bangladesh, where hundreds of thousands of people have moved to shelters across the low-lying delta nation's vast coastal region.

Up to 1.8 million were expected to be evacuated by Saturday evening ahead of Cyclone Bulbul, said Enamur Rahman, Bangladesh's junior disaster management minister.

More than 5,000 shelters had been prepared by Saturday morning.

Cyclone Bulbul batters coastal Odisha

Cyclone Bulbul has wreaked havoc in coastal districts of Odisha on Saturday. While the death of one old person reported due to wall collapse in Rajkanika block of Kendrapara district, the Odisha government apprehends around 30-40 per cent damage to standing paddy crop under the impact of rains caused by the cyclonic storm.
